Nichols, Gillespie Named Big South Scholar-Athletes of the Year

HIGH POINT, N.C. – UNC Asheville distance runner Blanton Gillespie and sprinter Kayli Nichols were named the Men's and Women's Big South Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
The announcement was made following the conclusion of the Big South Outdoor Championships on Friday at High Point.
Gillespie is a major in Chemistry and he owns a 3.995 grade-point average. He recently received the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. In the indoor season, he was named to the Track and Field All-Academic squad. He set personal records this outdoor season in the 1500m, 3000m and 5000m.
Nichols is a double-major in German and Political Science, and she is also minoring in Spanish at UNC Asheville. She currently sports a 3.971 cumulative grade-point average, and the senior was named the Big South Indoor Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She owns the second-fastest record in the 100m hurdles and has the second-best mark in the 400mH at UNC Asheville.
To be eligible for the All-Academic Team, the student-athlete must hold at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and must be of at least sophomore status at the institution. The student-athlete must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition as well.
