ASHEVILLE, N.C. – It was a fun, but, most importantly, a very important hour for the future of UNC Asheville athletics.
UNC Asheville athletics held its inaugural Facebook LIVE Bulldog Challenge event from 7-8 p.m. on Monday, March 26, and in just one hour raised $17,265.
The Facebook LIVE event was billed as a chance for UNC Asheville student-athletes and fans to get the opportunity to raise the most money in support of their team so that they could dunk their coach in the Justice Center Pool.
It was baseball that had that opportunity with assistant coach Jonathan Johnston taking the plunge after the program raised an impressive $10,400 over the course of the hour.
Johnston made his way into the water alongside UNC Asheville's beloved mascot, Rocky, in a kayak.
UNC Asheville women's basketball head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick and Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics for Advancement and Alumni Engagement Betsy Blose also made their way into the pool. Women's basketball raised a tremendous $3,960 for the program over the course of the hour.

The Facebook LIVE event was truly fun for Bulldogs everywhere, who all had the unique opportunity to see all of the UNC Asheville teams competing against one another for a great cause.
Blose served as the emcee on the evening with Annual Giving & Communications Manager Aaron Dahlstrom helming the camera.
"I just want to say thank you to everybody," Blose said after the conclusion of the important hour. "All of the coaches, staff and student-athletes did a great job coming out tonight in support of the Bulldog Challenge. It truly takes a team effort. We raised over $17,000 in an hour. We are truly thankful to everyone that donated. It's not too late to give. You can give to the Bulldog Challenge up until March 31. Overall, what a great time. I think the student-athletes had a great time. Hopefully, we'll continue to build on this. Go Bulldogs!"
The Facebook LIVE event was part of UNC Asheville's annual Bulldog Challenge that encompasses the month of March.
The Bulldog Challenge was a historic success in 2017, and the 2018 Bulldog Challenge is shaping up to be an even bigger success.
With only a few days left after the over $17,000 raised on Monday, March 26, the 2018 Bulldog Challenge is about to hit $100,000 for the month with well over 350 donors.
In total, the 2017 Bulldog Challenge went 265 percent past its original goal of $40,000 with $106,000 raised.
For 2018, UNC Asheville set an ambitious goal of $125,000, and is nearing the mark down the stretch.
During the month of March, all former student-athletes and Bulldog fans are challenged to make a gift to UNC Asheville Athletics. Their gift directly impacts today's scholar-athlete by providing scholarships, tutoring and essential academic support that allow the Bulldogs to compete at the highest level.
The 2016 Bulldog Challenge had 237 total gifts, while the 2017 Bulldog Challenge had a total of 571 overall gifts with 442 unique donors.
The UNC Asheville team with the most donors on March 31 will be crowned the 2018 Bulldog Challenge champions.
Right now after the Facebook LIVE event, women's golf has the most donors at 68, but men's soccer is not too far behind with 52 donors.
Baseball has raised the most money currently with almost $18,000 raised. UNC Asheville baseball will be donating 50 percent of all of their proceeds to Vs Cancer and the fight against children's cancer.
