Gilliam of UNC Asheville Men’s Soccer Has Life-Changing Experience in Nicaragua

03.16.2018 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A trip for Tanner Gilliam of UNC Asheville men's soccer to Nicaragua recently was truly life-changing.

"I learned to never take anything for granted and always work your hardest in what you are doing," Gilliam said.

The trip to Nicaragua was part of a church community service project.

The 6-foot, 165-pound defender/midfielder out of Hendersonville High School who will join the Bulldogs in August originally arrived to Nicaragua in Managua, Nicaragua and then rode a van for a couple of hours to a hostel in Leon, Nicaragua.

The first full day in Nicaragua, Gilliam and those also part of the community service project spoke to people in a hospital before helping to install a stove in the local community. The group also played soccer with the young children from the community.

The next day, the HFC 00 Red product and his group visited another community where they interacted with the people from the area, while also once again playing soccer with the young children from the community.

Gilliam's final day in Nicaragua featured the group visiting another village to install more stoves and water filters.
