UNC Asheville Hosts Winthrop on Saturday at Greenwood Field

10.05.2018 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville men's soccer will next welcome Winthrop to Greenwood Field for a 5 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 6.

The Big South matchup will serve as UNC Asheville's annual "Jeans for Genes" match with all fans asked to wear jeans to help raise awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In addition, UNC Asheville will give free admission to those who bring five items for donation to the Manna Food Bank.

The match will also serve as "Scout Saturday" at Greenwood Field with free admission for all boy/cub scouts and scoutmasters on the evening.

The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.

BULLDOG BITES

Finding the Back of the Net

UNC Asheville's Taylor Durall has scored in the past two matches for the Bulldogs. He now leads the team in both goals (three) and points (seven).

Going to Overtime
UNC Asheville (1-8-2, 0-3-0 Big South) has now had three overtime matches this season, including two straight. The Bulldogs this past weekend tied Furman 1-1 at Greenwood Field before falling 2-1 to High Point in overtime on Wednesday. UNC Asheville also tied Appalachian State, 1-1, on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Greenwood Field.

About the Eagles
Winthrop (1-7-0, 0-3-0) is currently in the midst of a seven-game losing streak. Jordan Walshaw and Leif Estevez lead the Eagles with seven points each. Both have two goals and three assists each.

Series
UNC Asheville has won the last two in the series and three of the last five meetings between the two teams at Greenwood Field. Last season in Rock Hill, Colin Daughtry's goal off a Dante' Bova assist in the 46th minute would prove to be all the Bulldogs needed in a 1-0 Big South Conference road win on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017. One year earlier at Greenwood Field on Oct. 22, 2016, UNC Asheville picked up a 1-0 victory over the Eagles.

Quotable
"We are excited to play Saturday," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "Certainly, we are gutted against the result this past week against a very good High Point team, but we played fantastic and we did a lot of great things. The Big South is far from over. The only team you can feel comfortable about where they are going to finish is High Point. They're going to finish in the top three. For the rest of us, it's all open.

"The Winthrop match for us is a crucial game for Winthrop and UNC Asheville. Both teams need to have the same kind of outlook on things and three points is kind of what we are looking for and they are too, which should make for a really exciting, tense and emotional soccer game. Anytime you can add that type of atmosphere against a great school like Winthrop, the match should be a lot of fun and exciting for the fans."

Up Next
UNC Asheville men's soccer will next travel to Clinton, S.C. to take on league rival Presbyterian College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
