Two Chances to Catch UNC Asheville at Home This Weekend

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville volleyball hosts two Big South matches this weekend at the Justice Center.
The Bulldogs will first play host to Gardner-Webb for a 6 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 5 before playing host to Winthrop at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Friday's match will be "Fan Appreciation Day" at the Justice Center with the Bulldogs giving away sunglasses.
On Saturday UNC Asheville will be offering free admission to all Big Brothers Big Sisters of America participants. That free admission will also be available for the men's soccer match at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Greenwood Field.
Saturday will also be "Youth Sports Day" at the Justice Center with free admission for all children wearing their jerseys.

UNC Asheville in the Big South Statistics
The Bulldogs are presently third in the conference in hitting percentage (.210). Individually, Cara Guthrie is third in the league in kills (3.18) per set and fourth in the league in points (3.76) per set. She is sixth (0.38) in aces per set. Julia Loveday (.314) is fourth in the league in hitting percentage, while Ansley Rooks (.260) is ninth in the category. Cecilia Stack (0.82) is eighth in the league in blocks per set. UNC Asheville's Madisen Zyburt is third in the league in digs per set at 4.56.
About Gardner-Webb and Winthrop
The Runnin' Bulldogs make their way to Asheville for the "Battle of the Bulldogs" on Friday night owning a 6-11 overall record. Gardner-Webb is 0-4 in league play. Kylee Garrison (135) and Hannah Lancaster (103) both have over 100 kills for Gardner-Webb. Winthrop travels to USC Upstate before taking on the Bulldogs on Saturday. The Eagles enter the weekend at 7-10 overall. Winthrop is 3-2 in league play so far. The Eagles are led by Sydney Gunter's 141 kills on the season.

Guthrie Named Official Candidate for 2018 Senior CLASS Award
UNC Asheville volleyball senior standout Cara Guthrie has been chosen as an official candidate for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate volleyball.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Guthrie is the only official candidate for the award from the Big South Conference.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
Guthrie presently owns a 3.4 grade-point average as an accounting major. She is also minoring in business management.
Earlier this season Guthrie joined a very select group of Bulldogs with over 1,000 kills. Guthrie was a first-team All-Big South selection last season and she was chosen to the preseason all-league team this season.
Guthrie is currently third in the Big South in kills (3.18) per set and fourth in the league in points (3.71) per set. She is sixth in the league in aces per set at 0.38.
A two-year team captain, Guthrie is a member of UNC Asheville's "The Order of Pisgah."
"The Order of Pisgah," established in 2012 at UNC Asheville, is the student program dedicated to assisting the University's Chancellor and the Division of University Advancement with achieving the goals and mission of UNC Asheville. Members of "The Order of Pisgah" host special University audiences and demonstrate the intellectual, creative and diverse involvements of the UNC Asheville student body.
Guthrie also participated in the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program this spring where she went to the Pack Library in downtown Asheville and helped low-income families prepare and file their tax returns. In addition, she has coached youth volleyball in the Asheville area and has attended numerous community service projects with the UNC Asheville volleyball team.
