About the Bulldogs
UNC Asheville (1-7-2, 0-2-0) travels to High Point coming off a thrilling 1-1 tie with Furman at Greenwood Field on Saturday, Sept. 29. Taylor Durall scored UNC Asheville's goal in the 87th minute of the match. Durall's second goal of the season allowed him to tie Izaiah Vignali and Lane Carroll for the team lead with two goals each. Durall also has an assist on the year, which ties him with Vignali for the overall team lead in points with five.
Building Bulldogs
Last year UNC Asheville dropped its match at Furman, 4-0. This season the Bulldogs battled the Paladins to a 1-1 tie. The 1-1 tie more than shows the growth of the Bulldog program over the early part of the 2018 season with UNC Asheville collecting just its fourth-ever positive result in its 19th all-time meeting against a Furman program that has long been considered one of the best in the country.
About High Point
The Panthers play host to the Bulldogs ranked 23rd in the latest College Soccer News top-30 national poll. High Point is 8-1 overall on the 2018 season. The Panthers have opened league play a perfect 3-0. High Point's Ilias Kosmidis is the reigning Big South Attacking Player of the Week after receiving the honor for the second time this season this week, while goalkeeper Keegan Meyer has been named Big South Defensive Player of the Week three times this season.
Quotable
"High Point is having a great year," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "They have been really good for the past couple of years. Last year they were excellent and probably deserved a little bit more than they ended up with. But they've really challenged themselves with their schedule and they have executed that schedule in a great way. Coach (EJ) O'Keeffe and his staff present a unique and a challenging team. The nice thing is that it is not the first time that we have played a team that's ranked and I think our guys will see that as a great opportunity. High Point is very difficult to play against because they do a lot of things really, really well and then when you add in that they are at home against us then they do a lot of really, really great things even better at home.
"We've got our work cut out for us, but I certainly like the way that we finished the game against Furman and if we can kind of carry that quality into High Point with the same type of resolve and commitment to doing what we want to do, I think it will be a fun match. I said after the Furman game that the rubber is starting to meet the road, so this is not a must-win game in terms of the season is over if we don't get a result, but it is a game that could really put us right where we want to be as we talk about moving down the road with our group. This is a great opportunity for us."
