GRIMESLAND, N.C. – UNC Asheville cross country put together a strong day at the East Carolina Pirate Invitational.

The UNC Asheville women finished fifth in the 6K event, while the men finished seventh in the 8K race.

Elon claimed the women's championship, while Duke picked up top honors on the men's side of things.

UNC Asheville's Clara Wincheski continued the strong start to her freshman campaign with a sixth-place finish at the Pirate Invitational. The two-time Big South Runner of the Week posted a time of 21:29.573.

Four Bulldogs finished in the top-35 with Kelley Coleman 26th (23:11.626), Madeline Nichols 31st (23:49.736) and Megan Brewer 32nd (23:51.786).

Thomas Little captured the top performance for the men with a 27th place finish with a time of 25:49.210. Zach Boone was not too far behind in 31st with a time of 26:07.963. Sage Turner finished his day in 37th with a time of 26:21.926.

"We had some up and down performances today," UNC Asheville cross country head coach Jesse Norman said after the Pirate Invitational. "Overall, it seemed we were just a little off today, so that is on us coaches to get them ready for two weeks from now. We are definitely excited for Clara, Zach and Thomas, as they got on the all-time lists for their performances."

UNC Asheville cross country will next compete in the Big South Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 26 in High Point, N.C.
