10.01.2018 | Women's Volleyball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville volleyball senior standout Cara Guthrie has been chosen as an official candidate for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate volleyball.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Guthrie is the only official candidate for the award from the Big South Conference.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
Guthrie presently owns a 3.4 grade-point average as an accounting major. She is also minoring in business management.
Earlier this season Guthrie joined a very select group of Bulldogs with over 1,000 kills. Guthrie was a first-team All-Big South selection last season and she was chosen to the preseason all-league team this season.
Guthrie is currently third in the Big South in kills (3.18) per set and fourth in the league in points (3.71) per set. She is sixth in the league in aces per set at 0.38.
A two-year team captain, Guthrie is a member of UNC Asheville's "The Order of Pisgah."
"The Order of Pisgah," established in 2012 at UNC Asheville, is the student program dedicated to assisting the University's Chancellor and the Division of University Advancement with achieving the goals and mission of UNC Asheville.
