The Bulldogs
UNC Asheville will be looking for its first-ever win over NC State in their third meeting all-time and first since 1994. The Bulldogs (1-7, 0-1-0 Big South Conference) enter the match against the Wolfpack having split their last two matches with a win over Wofford and the conference-opening loss to High Point this past weekend.
Wofford Win
The UNC Asheville men's soccer team emphatically picked up its first win of the 2017 season by easily dispatching of Wofford, 2-0, on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs controlled the run of play for pretty much the entire match and probably could have added even more goals to their total as they had numerous quality chances in the first and second half.
UNC Asheville scored the first goal in its win over Wofford in the 15th-minute when senior Ben Chapal assisted sophomore Luiz Felipe Dantas.
Chapal would get one of his own minutes later when in the 27th-minute fellow Asheville native Jackson Allen beautifully sent a through ball toward Chapal, who would do the rest and slot the ball into the back of the net for what would be the final goal of the night.
UNC Asheville overall out-shot the Terriers, 19-13, in the match. The Bulldogs had 10 of their 19 shots in the match on frame. UNC Asheville also held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.Â
About NC State
NC State (3-3-1, 1-2-0 ACC) has had a strong start to the season that has led to national rankings at points. Their biggest win of the season was a 1-0 win over then No. 3/5 Clemson on Friday, Sept. 8, at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Quotable
"Any time you have the opportunity to play teams from the ACC, which is the premier soccer conference in NCAA Division I, it's a great opportunity. NC State's off to a great start. They beat Clemson to start off ACC play. They played Notre Dame very tough and they played Wake Forest very tough, so we've certainly got our hands full. It's going to be a great opportunity for our guys. It's a very challenging match. It's a very difficult stretch when you have High Point, NC State and Radford. That's a tough road, but also a challenge I think we're up for and our guys are excited for the opportunity for us to go up there and continue to work on the things were doing and clean up some of the other stuff. It'll be a great test for us. I'm excited about it. Coach Kiefer's long track record of success is well-known and he certainly has NC State going in the direction that everyone expects a program of that reputation to go. We're looking forward to the challenge and it should be a fun match." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
Back in The Triangle
UNC Asheville men's soccer has heavily recruited The Triangle area with current Bulldogs Zack Compton (Cary, N.C./Green Hope), Brandon Millington (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek), Elvis Wiredu (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), Bashirr Morray (Apex, N.C./Raleigh Charter), Brendan O'Dowd (Cary, N.C./Panther Creek), Andrew Lawrence (Fuquay-Varina, N.C./Fuquay-Varina) and Colin Daughtry (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) all calling the area home.
"It's a great occasion, especially with the amount of players that we have from the Raleigh Triangle area. It's great to be able to go home and play in front of more family and friends than you necessarily get to on a normal basis." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
Up Next
UNC Asheville will next return to Big South play by traveling to Radford to face the Highlanders at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. The match will be carried live on the Big South Network.
