Bulldogs to Host Asheville Cross Country Invitational This Saturday

2017 Asheville Cross Country Invitational Participating Teams/Course Maps
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville cross country program will host its lone home meet of the 2017 season this Saturday, Sept. 23, in the Asheville Cross Country Invitational at Asheville Christian Academy.
In addition to the host Bulldogs, the 2017 Asheville Cross Country Invitational will feature 11 teams in total with Auburn Montgomery, Carson-Newman, Gardner-Webb, Lenoir-Rhyne, Milligan, Montreat, Presbyterian, Warren Wilson, Western Carolina and Wofford all participating.
The men's four-mile portion of the event will get underway at 9 a.m. The women's two-mile run is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start.
The 2017 Asheville Cross Country Invitational will be a part of UNC Asheville's Homecoming & Family Weekend festivities over the course of the upcoming weekend.

Last Year's Asheville Cross Country Invitational
UNC Asheville's Dominic Collichio claimed top honors at last year's Asheville Cross Country Invitational, while the Bulldog men finished fourth as a team and the women finished third.
Last Weekend at the Liberty Big South Preview
Both the UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams put together strong team performances at the Liberty Big South Preview on Saturday, Sept. 16.
Senior Dominic Collichio was the top finisher for the Bulldogs with a time of 28:20.5. The time earned him a 14th-place finish. The Bulldogs had three runners finish in the top-20 in total with sophomore Zach Boone finishing 18th with a time of 28:28.8 and sophomore Hunter Newman taking 20th with a time of 28:33.2. UNC Asheville junior David Hager just missed on a top-20 finish with a 21st-place finish with a time of 28:35.4. UNC Asheville freshman Quin Meyer was right behind in 22nd with a time of 28:46.7, while junior Blanton Gillespie finished 25th with a time of 28:57.9.
In the women's 5K, the Bulldogs closed things out with a third place finish as a team. The Bulldogs ended their efforts with 84 points. High Point claimed top honors with 19 total points, while Liberty was in second with 43 total points.
UNC Asheville sophomore Kamryn DeCarmo picked up a top-10 finish with a time of 19:52.2 to finish 10th overall. Three Bulldogs finished in the top-20 overall with junior Kelley Coleman's time of 19:54.6 giving her a 13th-place finish. Senior Phoebe Schneider finished in 17th with a time of 20:10.7.
League Award Winners
The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams were both honored with Big South Sportsmanship Awards for the 2016-17 season.
"This is really cool to be recognized among our conference peers," UNC Asheville cross country head coach Jesse Norman said. "This goes back to what Janet R. Cone and everybody has talked about in recruiting the right individuals. We are getting more of those student-athletes and they are doing some good things for us."
The Bulldogs finished off last season with the UNC Asheville men's cross country team finishing sixth at the 2016 Big South Cross Country Championship and the women finishing fifth at the championship hosted by the UNC Asheville athletics department at Asheville Christian Academy. Dominic Collichio earned All-Conference honors for the Bulldogs with a seventh-place finish at the championship with a time of 25:43.40.

UNC Asheville will commence its efforts in the month of October by traveling to Greenville, N.C. to take part in the ECU Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13. The meet held at the Overton's Lake Kristi course will begin at 5:30 p.m.
