UNC Asheville Opens Big South Play by Hosting Gardner-Webb

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will open its 2017 Big South Conference schedule by playing host to Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Justice Center.
First serve in the league match between UNC Asheville (4-7) and Gardner-Webb (6-6) is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Justice Center.
Chick-Fil-A sandwiches will be available to the first 50 "Bulldog Blockade" members to arrive. There will also be a special "Freshmen Night Block Party" as well as the "Dawg Bowl" competition for the student-athletes.
The match will also be the first "Battle of the Bulldogs" meeting of the year in the battle for supremacy among the Big South's Bulldogs in Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville.

UNC Asheville junior outside hitter Cara Guthrie was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the 2017 Henson's Hawk Invite.
Guthrie finished UNC Asheville's three matches in the tournament with 54 kills and 35 digs. She averaged 3.86 kills and 2.50 digs per set and 18 kills and over 11 digs per match.
In UNC Asheville's thrilling 3-2 (17-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-14, 15-8) win over Delaware State on Friday, Sept. 15, Guthrie led the Bulldogs in their win with 21 kills to go along with seven digs. Guthrie hit an extremely impressive .488 in the match. She also had three service aces. In the Bulldogs' narrow loss to tournament host Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, Sept. 16, Guthrie led the Bulldogs in the match with 13 kills, six digs and three service aces.
UNC Asheville closed out The Henson's Hawk Invite with a 3-2 (25-14, 32-30, 16-25, 19-25, 15-6) victory over Coppin State on Saturday, Sept. 16, and once again Guthrie led the Bulldogs in the win with 22 digs and 20 kills.
On the year, Guthrie now has a team-best 133 kills and 111 digs.
All-Tournament
Cara Guthrie was one of four Bulldogs to earn All-Tournament honors at the Henson's Hawk Invite as freshmen Ava Venema (29 kills) and Cecilia Stack (15 kills, six blocks) and junior Madisen Zyburt (25 digs) were all named to the second team.
Venema earns her second All-Tournament honors of the season as she was also named to the Benson Hospitality Invitational All-Tournament team in late August.
In the Big South Statistics
Cara Guthrie is currently third in the Big South in kills per set at 3.50. She is also third in the league in points per game at 3.93. Ava Venema is presently third in the Big South in hitting percentage at .337.
Scouting the Runnin' Bulldogs
Kaelyn Dyson leads the way for Gardner-Webb with 106 kills, while Keira Moore leads the Runnin' Bulldogs and the Big South with 60 blocks. Amanda Sahm leads Gardner-Webb with 319 assists.
