UNC Asheville Assistant Coaches Take Advantage of Unique Opportunity
09.15.2017 | General
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In athletics, it's always about seizing opportunities.
And one opportunity that the UNC Asheville athletics assistant coaches were certain not to miss was the chance to learn from retired Army Colonel Pete Champagne.
The special meeting between Champagne and the assistant coaches was devised by Associate Athletics Director for Athletics Operations Terri Brne and UNC Asheville Senior Administrator for University Enterprises and Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone.
The two-hour meeting between the assistant coaches and Champagne was important in that it allowed them the opportunity to learn more about important leadership principles and much more.
"What I've heard from Terri is that this is very rare where a university will invest in their frontline people – in this case the assistant coaches – to provide some leadership development," Champagne said. "As you know, leadership changes lives and we want to equip these assistant coaches with the latest and greatest leadership principles so they can be more effective and be the kind of leader that can be a change agent in the lives of student-athletes."
Champagne loves the fact that the UNC Asheville athletics department considered it so important to continue to foster growth in its assistant coaches.
"It's kind of really inspiring to me to be associated with a university like UNC Asheville where they want to invest in their people," Champagne said. "One of the things that the university is trying to do is not only have champions on the field, but leaders for life and by equipping these assistant coaches with these leadership principles it will enable them to be a leader for life and it will make a difference not only here within the university and the athletics department, but within the community."
Champagne spoke with all of the student-athletes, coaches and staff at the "Welcome Back" celebration for the 2017-18 athletic year on Sunday, Aug. 20, at Kimmel Arena and Cone is excited that he continues to work with UNC Asheville athletics in such an impactful way.
"I want to thank Terri Brne for her leadership in making this happen," Cone said. "This is a really unique opportunity for our assistant coaches and I am thrilled by the fact that so many relished the opportunity. We truly want our assistant coaches to have opportunities that will help them grow in meaningful ways while they are at our institution, and this is just another example of our goal of continuing to make champions in athletics and leaders in life not only with our student-athletes, but our coaches and staff as well."
