BOONE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2017 season on Friday, Sept. 1, by competing in the Covered Bridge Open.
The meet hosted by Appalachian State at State Farm Fields and Don Kennedy Trails gets underway at 5 p.m. with the women's 5,000m. The men's 8,000m is slated to commence at 5:45 p.m.
The UNC Asheville women's cross country team was tabbed to finish fifth, while the men's cross country team was chosen to finish sixth in the 2017 Big South Conference Preseason Polls released by the league office on Thursday, Aug. 17.
The projections fall right in line with where the Bulldogs finished off last season with the UNC Asheville men's cross country team finishing sixth at the 2016 Big South Cross Country Championship and the women finishing fifth at the championship hosted by the UNC Asheville athletics department at Asheville Christian Academy.

"We're pretty excited about getting things started. We're looking to see where everybody is at right now. I think the biggest thing is going to be the weather. It looks like it's going to be a little cold and there is a 100 percent chance of rain, so that may put a little wrinkle into our plans, but we'll roll with it as it's cross country, it's what we do. I think the biggest thing is just seeing the competitive effort out of everybody out there. That's the biggest thing we're looking for. No matter if it's raining hard, no matter the conditions, give us 100 percent effort and let's see where you are at and how competitive you are." – Head Coach Jesse Norman
