Bulldogs Close Out Efforts at Benson Hospitality Invitational with Loss to Host Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team closed out its efforts in the Benson Hospitality Invitational with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-18) loss to tournament host Georgia at the Ramsey Center.
In the first set, the two teams would play extremely close early on with UNC Asheville down just two at 15-13. Asheville (1-2) would be down only five at 20-15 shortly thereafter, but Georgia (3-0) would close things out from there to secure a 25-17 first set win.
The second set began much the same way with Asheville only down four early at 13-9, but Georgia from there would score five straight points to double up the Bulldogs in blue, 18-9. Georgia would then go on to take the 25-13 win in the set.
UNC Asheville would battle again in the third set and were once again only down by five at 20-15, but Georgia would be able to do just enough to close out the match with the seven-point win in the third set.

Freshmen Leading the Way
Freshman Ava Venema led the Bulldogs in the match with six kills. She also had two blocks. Fellow freshman Cecilia Stack had five kills and one block.
We Dig It
Juniors Cara Guthrie and Madisen Zyburt both finished the loss to Georgia with 10 digs. The duo also finished the Bulldogs' three matches in the tournament with 33 digs overall each. Guthrie also led the Bulldogs in kills in total in the tournament with 30.
Set it Up
Sophomore setter Carter Kennedy led the Bulldogs in the Georgia match with 11 assists. The 11 assists in the match allowed her to finish the tournament with a team-best 39 assists.

UNC Asheville will next travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for perhaps one of the team's toughest challenge of the season in Florida State's Home2 Suites by Hilton – Tallahassee Seminole Tournament. All three of the Bulldogs' opponents in Tallahassee advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season and boasted a combined record of 62-28. On Friday, Sept. 1, Asheville will take on the host Seminoles and Colorado State. Both programs finished 2016 with more than 20 wins on the year and each finished second in their respective conference regular season standings. On Saturday, Sept. 2, UNC Asheville will face off against TCU.
