Bulldogs Fall to LIU Brooklyn in Season Opener

08.25.2017 | Women's Volleyball

ATHENS, Ga. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team battled, but ultimately fell 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 32-30) to LIU Brooklyn in its season opener at the Benson Hospitality Invitational.

After falling 25-19 in the first set, UNC Asheville was down 23-20 in the second set before rallying to tie things up at 24-all after a kill by Ava Venema. A Venema block would then give the Bulldogs a 25-24 advantage, but three straight points from the Blackbirds garnered them a 27-25 win to take a 2-0 lead overall in the match.

The two teams would play close the majority of the third set, but it would be UNC Asheville (0-1) that would own a 24-22 lead in the latter part of the set. LIU Brooklyn (1-0) would score the next two to once again force extra points before eventually emerging with a narrow 32-30 win to take the match.

Cara Guthrie led two Bulldogs with double-doubles in the match with 15 digs and 14 kills. Ansley Rooks finished with 11 kills and 11 digs.

Kailey Hackett led the Bulldogs in assists with 14, while Carter Kennedy had 13 assists.

Madisen Zyburt ended the first match of the day for the Bulldogs with 12 digs. Julia Loveday had four of the Bulldogs' five blocks in the match.

The Bulldogs will next close out the first day of the tournament by taking on George Mason at 1:30 p.m.
