UNC Asheville Cross Country Picked Among Best in League in Preseason Polls

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's cross country team was tabbed to finish fifth, while the men's cross country team was chosen to finish sixth in the 2017 Big South Conference Preseason Polls released by the league office on Thursday, Aug. 17.
The projections fall right in line with where the Bulldogs finished off last season with the UNC Asheville men's cross country team finishing sixth at the 2016 Big South Cross Country Championship and the women finishing fifth at the championship hosted by the UNC Asheville athletics department at Asheville Christian Academy.
"I think they as we always do see where we finished last year and where we finish historically and pick spots from there," UNC Asheville cross country head coach Jesse Norman said. "Hopefully, we can do better than what the rankings are, especially on the men's side. We've got some high expectations and the guys have some high expectations for themselves, so hopefully they can beat that. On the women's side, we've got some talent, but we've got a small roster. That's going to be an issue we are going to have to work through this year. I think if we're healthy at the end of the year and we've got the five strong performers we need then we will be a fifth-place team or better at that point. We'll play it by ear and see how the season goes."
The Bulldogs will open the 2017 season by traveling to Boone, N.C. on Friday, Sept. 1, to compete in the Covered Bridge Open. The meet hosted by Appalachian State gets underway at 5 p.m.
The Bulldogs will host their lone meet of the year to close out their efforts in the month of September in the Asheville Cross Country Invitational. The meet to be held at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Asheville Christian Academy will be part of UNC Asheville's annual Homecoming celebration.
