2017-18 Women's Swimming Schedule

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
UNC Asheville head women's swimming coach Elizabeth Lykins released the Bulldogs' 2017-18 schedule Thursday afternoon.

The slate features 10 regular-season dates, including four home meets at the Justice Center Pool, and will pit the Bulldogs up against some tough competition to prepare them for the 2018 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Conference Championships in the middle of February.

"The 2017-18 meet schedule will hopefully prepare the team for an outstanding conference championship," Lykins said. "Along with our five in-conference competitions, we are looking forward to racing some different out-of-conference teams as well. We are also excited to be hosting four home meets this season, including honoring the graduating seniors in January at their last collegiate competition at home. Overall, the schedule will be a competitive one and I know the team will be prepared and excited to get the season started."

The season gets underway on Saturday, Sept. 16, with a brand new competition for the Bulldogs. UNC Asheville will open the 2017-18 season at the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Collegiate Open Water Swimming Championships held at Lone Star Lake located in Lawrence, Kansas. Racing is slated to start at 8:30 a.m. Central time.

"We are excited to be adding a new competition in mid-September for some of our distance swimmers," Lykins said. "We will take advantage of the opportunity to swim in the CSCAA Collegiate Open Water National Championships for a 5k race in Kansas."

Two weeks later, the Bulldogs will hold an instrasquad meet at the Justice Center Pool on Saturday, Sept. 30. That meet between the Blue and White teams will begin at 11 a.m.

UNC Asheville will start the month of October with a CCSA conference meet at Gardner-Webb on Friday, Oct. 6. The meet between the Bulldogs in blue and white and the Runnin' Bulldogs in red and black will begin at 5 p.m.

The Bulldogs will have another two weeks off before hosting two meets in a row to close out the month. The first will be on Saturday, Oct. 21, when UNC Wilmington comes to town for a 10 a.m. meet in the Justice Center Pool. The following week, Georgia Southern comes calling for a 1 p.m. meet on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Asheville will then compete in four meets on the road, taking them from November, through the winter training camp and into January.

First up will be another CCSA conference meet, this time in Buies Creek, North Carolina, at Campbell on Saturday, Nov. 4. The Bulldogs and Camels will start at 11 a.m.

Two weekends later, the Bulldogs will travel to Charlotte for the Fall Frenzy. The invitational featuring multiple teams has become a staple on the schedule and has continually proven to give the team one of the best weekends of experience in preparing for the conference meet. The meet runs from Friday, Nov. 17 through Sunday, Nov. 19, and will close out the 2017 portion of the Bulldogs' schedule.

UNC Asheville will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, with a three-team meet at CCSA foe Liberty. The Bulldogs and Flames will also be competing against Marshall with the first race starting at 11 a.m.

The following weekend, the Bulldogs will travel to Gainesville, Georgia, for a 12 p.m. meet against Brenau on Saturday, Jan. 20, before returning home for the final meet of the season on Friday, Jan. 26, and Saturday, Jan. 27. The two-day event will pit the Bulldogs up against CCSA foe North Florida. Friday's action will get started at 5 p.m. while Saturday will commence at 11 a.m.

The Bulldogs will then compete at the 2018 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Georgia, at the University of Georgia's state of the art Gabrielsen Natatorium. The conference championships will be contested from Wednesday, Feb. 14 through Saturday, Feb. 17.

The UNC Asheville women's swimming team was part of a record number of teams to earn Scholar All-America Team honors from the CSCAA last semester. It was the 10th consecutive semester the Bulldogs have earned the honor.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the fifth year of the program's existence at the 2017 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships in late February with a seventh-place finish, scoring 133 more points than last season. Included in the team's overall strong performance were 29 season-best times and 44 lifetime bests. Among those fast times were seven individual school records, five freshman records and two relay records.
