BAA Chair Bill Newman Asks All Bulldog Fans to Support the Scholarship Golf Classic

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville men's basketball senior guard Raekwon Miller knows just how important the annual event is every year.

He knows without the money raised from the yearly Bulldog Athletic Association Scholarship Golf Classic that the success on the court by the reigning Big South Conference regular-season champion UNC Asheville men's basketball team would not be possible.

"Your support means a lot to us, and we cannot do this without you," Miller said.

The 2017 Bulldog Athletic Association (BAA) Scholarship Golf Classic will be held Aug. 28 or 29 at The Country Club of Asheville.

The annual event sponsored by Adidas, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina and Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort raises scholarship money for the UNC Asheville Athletics Annual Scholarship Fund.

The cost for an individual player is $500 with team player fees for four $2,000.

All funds raised from the annual event will help provide athletic scholarships. Last year's BAA Scholarship Golf Classic raised over $106,000 for the UNC Asheville Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund.

UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone is incredibly thankful for the efforts of many over the years to make the BAA Scholarship Golf Classic a huge success, and she is looking forward to another strong event this August.

"I would like to express my gratitude to all of the participants and volunteers who have made this tournament such a great success over the years," Cone said. "The funds raised directly benefit the Athletics Scholarship Fund and allow our student-athletes to become Champions in Athletics and Leaders in Life."

A BAA Board member, Bruce Goforth looks forward to the BAA Scholarship Golf Classic each and every year.

"Playing in the UNC Asheville Golf Classic has created a lot of scholarships for young student-athletes," Goforth said. "We want to continue this tradition on August 28 and 29 at the newly renovated Country Club of Asheville. Join us for fun and the opportunity to help student-athletes fulfill their dreams and aspirations."

Wilma Sherrill has seen first-hand how funds raised from the BAA Scholarship Golf Classic has changed lives.

"Our BAA Golf Tournament is a fun and philanthropic way to help fund the scholarships necessary to recruit quality student-athletes," the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees member said. "Your support is needed and appreciated."

Like his fellow UNC Asheville Board of Trustees member, Rick Lutovsky knows the money raised from the BAA Scholarship Golf Classic impacts student-athletes for the rest of their lives.

"Meeting students who have benefited from scholarships made possible by golfers at the BAA Tournament is an emotional and gratifying experience," Lutovsky said. "Your contribution changes lives."

The first day of the 2017 BAA Scholarship Golf Classic will get underway at The Country Club of Asheville with registration at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 28. There will then be a shotgun start at 10 a.m. The first day will close with an "Awards and After Party" that will begin after all golfers have left the course.

Registration on day two of the BAA Scholarship Golf Classic on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at The Country Club of Asheville will start at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start scheduled for 10 a.m. The "Awards and After Party" will begin after all golfers have left the course.

If you are unable to play on one of the days you can also sponsor a foursome in the 2017 BAA Scholarship Golf Classic and/or become an event sponsor for $5,000, sponsor a hole for $1,200 and purchase tee sponsorship signage for $300 (information in links above and below).
