06.21.2017 | Women's Swimming & Diving
NORFOLK, Va. – The UNC Asheville women's swimming team was part of a record number of teams to earn Scholar All-America Team honors from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), it was announced Wednesday morning. It is the 10th consecutive semester the Bulldogs have earned the honor.
"It's an honor to be named a Scholar All-America Team for the Spring 2017 semester," said UNC Asheville head swimming coach Elizabeth Lykins. "Our team takes great pride in their academics and our staff is excited to see all of their hard work paying off both in the pool as well as in the classroom. We'd like to also recognize the incredible academic support our student-athletes receive from Rebecca Nelms, Dr. Jeff Wilcox and Dawn Turner."
To earn Scholar All-America Team honors, a team must have achieved a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher for the semester. During the Spring 2016 Semester, Asheville's swimming team posted a 3.41 GPA. Last semester, three Bulldogs were named to the Chancellor's List, posting a 4.0 GPA, and 11 Bulldog swimmers were named to the Dean's List by earning a 3.5-3.9 GPA.
720 teams, representing 443 schools set the record by earning the honor last semester. Seven of the 10 women's teams from the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) earned a spot on the list.
Per the CSCAA
For the first time in the 95-year history of the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) more than 700 teams have received Scholar All-America recognition. Included among the teams was UNC Asheville's Swimming Team.
CSCAA Executive Director Joel Shinofield cited UNC Asheville's success, noting: "Coach Elizabeth Lykins has done an exceptional job building a top program in the pool and the classroom at UNC Asheville. We are very fortunate to have schools like UNC Asheville and people like Chancellor Grant and Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone who support these exceptional student-athletes."
In total, 720 teams, representing 443 institutions achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the Spring 2017 Semester. Part of the reason for the increase in award-winning teams is the overall growth of the sport. The number of men's and women's institutions sponsoring swimming and diving is at a ten-year high. This year's three first-year programs - Salem International University, University of the Ozarks and McKendree University - posted the first or second highest GPA among their Division.
The Ivy League led Division I men's programs with Harvard, Dartmouth and Brown taking the top three spots. Harvard led with a 3.57 GPA. In Division II Urbana College's 3.69 edged Salem International by 0.02. Bridgeport was third with a 3.60. In Division III the University of the Ozarks tied Vassar College with a 3.71, just ahead of Cal Tech. SCAD-Savannah (3.63) and the Fashion Institute of Technology (3.84) led all NAIA and NJCAA men's teams respectively.
Among women's teams Brown University (3.77) bested Northern Iowa and South Carolina by just 0.06. In Division II, McKendree University's four-woman squad posted a perfect 4.00 to lead the way.
