2017 UNC Asheville Volleyball Schedule

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville head volleyball coach Frederico Santos released the 2017 volleyball schedule Wednesday afternoon.

The 26-match slate includes three early-season tournaments at the University of Georgia, Florida State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as well as eight home Big South Conference matches. The schedule features four teams that reached the NCAA tournament last season as well as four programs that won 20 or more matches a season ago.

"We have a very competitive schedule with three tournaments that will have us go up against some very competitive programs," Santos said. "My intention is that our nonconference matches will prepare us both mentally and physically for the rigors of the Big South Conference schedule."

UNC Asheville will open the season at Georgia's Benson Invitational in Athens, Ga., for the second straight year. This season, the Bulldogs in blue and white will begin their season with a pair of matches against Long Island University – Brooklyn and George Mason on the first day of the tournament, Friday, Aug. 25. The following day, Asheville will face off against the host Bulldogs in red and black.

The following week, UNC Asheville will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for perhaps the team's toughest challenge of the season, Florida State's Home2 Suites by Hilton – Tallahassee Seminole Tournament. All three of the Bulldogs' opponents in Tallahassee advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season and boasted a combined record of 62-28. On Friday, Sept. 1, Asheville will take on the host Seminoles and Colorado State. Both programs finished 2016 with more than 20 wins on the year and each finished second in their respective conference regular-season standings. On Saturday, Sept. 2, UNC Asheville will face off against TCU.

Following the tough challenge of the Florida State tournament, the Bulldogs will return to North Carolina for a road tilt at Western Carolina on Tuesday, Sept. 12, before traveling to Maryland for the final early season tournament.

UNC Asheville will play three teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference at the Maryland Eastern Shore Courtyard Classic. The Bulldogs open the tourney on Friday, Sept. 15, with a match against Delaware State. The following day, on Saturday, Sept. 16, the Bulldogs will play the host Hawks of UMES before closing out their time in Princess Anne, Md., with a match against Coppin State.

UNC Asheville will open Big South Conference play at home on Tuesday, Sept. 19, with a match against Gardner-Webb. The Bulldogs will then host Campbell on Friday, Sept. 22, before hitting the road again for matches at Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, Sept. 26, and Liberty on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The Bulldogs will open the month of October with a pair of home matches against Winthrop and Charleston Southern on Friday, Oct. 6, and Saturday, Oct. 7.

Following the pair of home contests, Asheville will travel to Radford, High Point and Presbyterian. The match against the Highlanders – last season's regular-season Big South Conference champs with an overall record of 24-6 – will take place on Friday, Oct. 13, with the tilt against the Panthers coming the following day, Saturday, Oct. 14. Last season, the Panthers went 23-10 and won the Big South Championship crown as the No. 3 seed. The Bulldogs and Blue Hose will tangle on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

UNC Asheville will return home to the Justice Center on Friday, Oct. 20, for a contest against High Point with Radford coming to Asheville the following day, Saturday, Oct. 21.

The Bulldogs will hit the road for the final three games to close out the month of October and open November. UNC Asheville first travels to Charleston Southern on Friday, Oct. 27, and the Bulldogs end the month at Winthrop on Saturday, Oct. 28. The Bulldogs will open the month of November at Campbell on Saturday, Nov. 4.

UNC Asheville will end the regular season at home with home matches against Presbyterian and Liberty on Tuesday, Nov. 7 and Thursday, Nov. 9.

The 2017 squad will feature one of the youngest rosters in the conference with seven sophomores and four freshman complemented by three juniors. Last season, the 2016 team went 12-16, reaching the Big South Conference Championship, with a roster comprised of seven freshmen, three sophomores, one junior and two seniors.
