‘Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon’ Presented by Wells Fargo a Huge Success

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville Chancellor Mary K. Grant is not shy about her affection for Bulldog athletics.

That's why it came as no surprise that Grant served as the emcee for the 2017 "Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon" presented by Wells Fargo supporting women's athletic scholarships on Wednesday, May 3, on the Kimmel Arena floor at the Sherrill Center.

In fact, just moments after senior women's swimming student-athlete Reid Jackson talked about why her scholarship to UNC Asheville meant so much to her, Grant let it be known just how much she loved being a Bulldog to everyone in attendance.

"I love my job," Grant said.

Those four simple words perfectly captured a special luncheon that featured Adidas U.S. Director of Women's Sports Marketing Beth Bass as the keynote speaker.

UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone could not agree with the head Bulldog any more, and she was incredibly thankful for what was a record-breaking "Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon."

"The annual 'Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon' supporting women's athletic scholarships here at UNC Asheville is one of our most important events of the year," Cone said. "This fundraising event is key to the success of our women's athletics programs, and this year we have been overwhelmed by the amount of individuals who want to help support this endeavor with this year's luncheon our biggest one yet."

In addition to serving as the keynote speaker, Bass was also honored with the prestigious 2017 Trailblazer award presented by Morgan Stanley at the luncheon.

Bass, who along with Adidas also gave out special t-shirts to everyone in attendance at the luncheon, is incredibly impressed with all of the great things taking place at UNC Asheville presently.

"I respect what Janet Cone has been doing here and I love what (current UNC Asheville women's basketball head coach) Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick and before that (former UNC Asheville women's basketball head coach and current Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics for Advancement and Alumni Engagement) Betsy Blose, who I actually played against when I was in college, have done with the women's basketball programs," Bass said. "In general, all I read about is people cutting sports and UNC Asheville is adding sports successfully, and to have 600 allies of the Bulldog nation along with the corporate partners here with the student-athletes it just inspires me to always want to give back for the next generation. We're supporting Title IX, which will be 45 in June, and to me that is what it's all about."

Cone is appreciative that Bass would give of her time to support the women's athletic programs at UNC Asheville.

"What a treat it was to hear from former Women's Basketball Coaches Association CEO and current Adidas U.S. Director of Sports Marketing Beth Bass at the luncheon," Cone said. "I know that all of our student-athletes and really everyone in attendance learned a great deal from such an important presence in the sports field."

In addition to hearing from a current student-athlete in Jackson, the luncheon also featured former Bulldog Molly de Mattos of UNC Asheville track and field.

The whole experience was one that everyone in attendance thoroughly enjoyed, but Cone knows it never could have been possible without the hard work of many.

"I truly would like to thank all of those on the 'Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon' committee for their efforts for the event," Cone said. "This event takes a great deal to plan and execute and everyone involved has gone above and beyond to make it a success. I also would like to thank Wells Fargo for being the official sponsor and all of our corporate sponsors (Wells Fargo, Chartwells – UNC Asheville Dining and Services, Morgan Stanley, Omni Grove Park Inn & Resort and Arby's) and our many friends for being so generous to make this event happen."
