LEXINGTON, Ky. - "I'm going in with the goal that I want to run a new PR and beyond that my ultimate goal is to make it to nationals."
Matthew Harding said these words just one day before departing for the 2017 NCAA East Regional Preliminary in Lexington, Ky. on Wednesday, May 24.
Two days later, Harding captured his ultimate goal by advancing to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 7-10, in the 800 meters.
Harding's personal-record time of 1:47.92 in the national quarterfinals of the 800 meters on Friday, May 26, advanced him to Eugene. His time is a school-record and the second-best time in Big South Conference history in the 800 meters.
"We are super-excited for Matt qualifying for the NCAA National Championships in Eugene," UNC Asheville track and field head coach Jesse Norman said. "He has worked hard and trusted the program all year and is seeing the benefits now. We'll love seeing what he can do and the experience he'll gain from this exposure. Huge props to (assistant coach) Adam Puett for doing a great job of developing him this year."Â
Overall, 12 advanced from the NCAA East Regional Preliminary in the 800 meters to Eugene with Harding's time fourth-best in his own heat, but the fifth-best overall of the 12 qualifiers.
The Big South Indoor and Outdoor Freshman of the Year and the league's indoor and outdoor 800m champion, Harding now owns two of the three top times in the 800 meters in conference history.Â
