UNC Asheville’s Harding Advances to National Quarterfinals in 800 Meters

NCAA East Preliminary 800 Meters First Round Results (Click Link to Access)

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The goal was simple, but it still had to be accomplished, and that is exactly what Matthew Harding of UNC Asheville track and field did as he advanced to the regional finals of the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Round in the 800 meters.

Harding's time of 1:49.94 allowed him to finish third in his heat on Thursday, May 25, to move on to the regional finals, dubbed by the NCAA as the national quarterfinals, on Friday, May 26. The quarterfinals will take place at 6:45 p.m. EST, on Friday, May 26.

"We're super-excited about Matt's performance tonight," UNC Asheville head track and field coach Jesse Norman said. "If he can stay out trouble tomorrow during the event he might have a chance to go to Eugene. Super-proud of what he's accomplished so far."

Overall, the top three in each of the six heats plus the next six fastest times advanced to the national quarterfinals. Harding was one of nine in heat three, which was one of six heats in the first round.

The Big South Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, Harding in moving on to the national quarterfinals now has a chance at advancing to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 7-10.

The top three from each quarterfinal plus the next three fastest times in the 800 meters will advance to Eugene, Ore.
