UNC Asheville Athletics Celebrates National Student-Athlete Day
04.06.2017 | General
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - There is not a day that goes by that UNC Asheville is not thankful for its student-athletes, but National Student-Athlete Day on April 6 gave the athletics department even more of a reason to celebrate all that the Bulldog student-athletes do for the University.
Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Success Rebecca Nelms had really been looking forward to this year's National Student-Athlete Day.
"I love having a designated National Student-Athlete Appreciation Day," Nelms said. "They work so hard, and any chance that we can have to celebrate them is a great thing."
National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. NCAA involvement began in 1994. The day recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes who excel in the classroom, on the playing fields and who give back to their community through service projects.
To help celebrate the UNC Asheville student-athletes the athletics department offered free ice cream from The Hop Ice Cream Café from 12-1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, at the Justice Center.
In addition, Bulldog student-athletes were allowed to choose a special gift of an ID sleeve for their phone, headphones or a water bottle.
A 2005 graduate of UNC Asheville where he was a standout for the Bulldog men's soccer program, The Hop Ice Cream Café owner Greg Garrison was happy to be there to support the current UNC Asheville student-athletes.
"We are heavily involved in the athletics department in general in me personally as a supporter and then as The Hop as well as a business that is supportive," Garrison said. "Any time there is a function that ice cream is appropriate to be at then we're happy to be here every time."
