UNC Asheville Tennis Dominates Big South Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville men's and women's tennis teams dominated the Big South Conference weekly awards this week, claiming three of the four possible honors as it was announced Wednesday by the conference office.
Kylee Shipley has been named the Big South Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week while teammate Emily Sidor has been selected the Come Ready Nutrition Freshman of the Week. In addition, Henry Patten has been named the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
Shipley, a sophomore from West Palm Beach, Fla., posted an undefeated weekend, winning both her singles and doubles matches over Campbell and Longwood. Alongside Hannah Francisco at the No. 1 doubles position, Shipley defeated Lea Cutura and Pauline Roustan of Campbell, 6-3, to contribute to the Bulldogs' efforts to seize the doubles point. She then downed Roustan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
On Sunday, Shipley and Francisco topped Longwood's No. 1 pairing of Fallon Burger and Marija Venta, 6-3. The sophomore concluded her weekend with a comeback win over Paloma Alatorre of Longwood, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Shipley is now 10-3 in singles play, including 6-1 in matches that have gone the full three sets. She is also 8-4 in doubles competitions at the No. 1 position.
A freshman from Rockledge, Fla., Sidor went 2-0 in singles competition this past weekend. On Saturday, the freshman competed at the No. 6 singles slot, earning a thrilling three-set victory over Nina Asanin of Campbell, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. On Sunday, Sidor played at the No. 5 singles position for the first time this season, and went on to down Fallon Burger of Longwood in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. With her success over the weekend Sidor improves to 7-1 in singles play and has now won five straight singles matches.
"Both Kylee and Emily have worked very hard this season," head coach Lise Gregory stated. "The two had a great weekend, so the recognition is well deserved."
Patten, a sophomore from Manningtree, Essex, U.K., went undefeated in both singles and doubles competitions last weekend against Charlotte and Campbell.
Alongside Josh Swindler at the No. 1 doubles position, Patten downed the 49ers Leonardo Menezes and Rice, 6-2. In singles play, Patten defeated Charlotte's No. 1 Sam Rice, 6-1, 6-3.
On Saturday at Campbell, Patten topped Nicolas Rakitin in No. 1 singles play. The match was Patten's first to go the distance all season as he ultimately won, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0. Patten and Swindler also defeated the No. 1 pairing from the Camels' of Dustin Werner and Lorenz Shwab, 6-3. Patten is now 11-0 in singles play on the year winning every match but one in straight sets. Alongside Swindler, the No. 1 doubles pairing is 10-1 on the year and are riding a six-match winning streak.
"I'm delighted to see how much Henry has improved over the last year," Head Coach Tom Hand said. "As he continues to mature both on and off the court, I'm sure he has room to go even further."
Shipley, Sidor and the rest of the women's tennis team will look to continue their current five-match winning streak this Thursday, March 9, when they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to face Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m.
Patten and the men's tennis team will return to Asheville from their road swing to host West Liberty University this Friday, March 10, at the Asheville Racquet Club. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
