Bulldog Athletics Celebrates National Athletic Training Month
03.07.2017 | General
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone considered it extremely important.
And why not?
The UNC Asheville sports medicine staff under the direction of Tim White does a tremendous job of making sure the Bulldog student-athletes have everything that they need.
That's why on the morning of Monday, March 6, the UNC Asheville sports medicine staff were invited to a meeting at 9 a.m. at the Sherrill Center.
The sports medicine staff did not learn that they were expected to be at the meeting that included all the Bulldog head coaches and senior athletic staff until Sunday evening, but that was by design.
Not knowing what meeting they would be attending, the sports medicine staff was totally taken aback when the meeting started by Cone giving each of the staff members a special gift bag.
"We just wanted to say thank you," Cone said.
It was truly a very nice surprise according to White.
"We had no idea," White said.
The month of March is National Athletic Training Month and athletic trainers all across the nation are being honored for what they do to support their student-athletes.
Maybe a little biased, the UNC Asheville head coaches feel though that they have one of the best groups in the country.
In fact, after receiving the special gifts, three head coaches in attendance also took the time to thank White and Assistant Athletic Trainers Ashley St. Clair and Tavarus Ferguson.
UNC Asheville women's basketball head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick could not be more pleased with the efforts of St. Clair.
"Thank you for everything you've done," Kirkpatrick told St. Clair. "She treats the kids like we try to treat them, which is family, and they love her."
UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach Nick McDevitt has long felt that White is a vital part of their program. Â Â
"Our guys see Tim as one of the coaches," McDevitt said of White. "They spend a lot of time with him and I think it's because of the environment that Tim has created in the athletic training room."
UNC Asheville swimming head coach Elizabeth Lykins pointed out that her team also feels like Ferguson is a key component to their success.
"We had a meal at the end of our conference championship where we gave a big shout out to Tavarus," Lykins said of Ferguson. "We have been nothing but thankful for him."
Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Success for UNC Asheville, Rebecca Nelms works with the sports medicine staff, and she knows what the athletic department has in the current grouping of athletic trainers should not be taken for granted.
"You guys have created a wonderful atmosphere and you are a joy to work with not only as a peer, but as the service provider for the students," Nelms said.
