ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's swimming student-athlete Katie Brown is one of 12 UNC Asheville students to earn the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to 12 students from the Chemistry and Biology departments at UNC Asheville. To be eligible for the honor, students must have a high GPA, write an application letter and be recommended by their professors.

Brown, a sophomore from Woodstock, Ga., is studying Biology. She boasts a 3.87 GPA and she will be focusing the remainder of her undergraduate career on cancer research with UNC Asheville professor Dr. Thomas Meigs.

"I would not have had this opportunity if I had gone to any other institution," Brown said. "The professors in the biology department at UNCA are all wonderful and they truly care about their work, teaching, and the growth of their students. I believe that the relationships I have been able to have with my professors genuinely helped me receive the scholarship.

"Dr. Meigs is an esteemed faculty member, and I could not be more honored and excited to work under his guidance," Brown continued. "The overall goal of Dr. Meigs's lab is to investigate how missteps in cell signaling can cause cancer and metastasis. I am eager to begin my research, and with this work, I hope to honor the people in my life who have been affected by cancer."

"I am so proud of Katie for her hard work and commitment to the biology department and the swimming program," head swimming coach Elizabeth Lykins said. "Being a recipient of the GlaxoSmithKline scholarship is an outstanding recognition of Katie's dedication to her studies and undergraduate research. She was selected from a large pool of candidates and I am not surprised they found her application materials outstanding."
