Bulldogs Close Out Weems Baskin Invitational Strongly

2017 Weems Baskin Invitational
Location: Sheila and Morris Cregger Track / Columbia, S.C.
Dates:Â March 24-25
COLUMBIA, S.C.—The UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field team concluded competition at the Weems Baskin Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Kayli Nichols set both a personal and school record with a time of 14.20 in the 100 meter hurdles. Nichols also came in eighth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.93.
Kelley Coleman set a personal record in the 1500, finishing in ninth place, with a time of 4:50.22. On the men's side, the Bulldogs had two top-10 finishes with David Hager placing third with a time of 4:03.07 and Caleb Smith finishing eighth in 4:06.41.
Maddie Lowe and Coleman turned in top-10 performances in the women's 800m open, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively, with times of 2:23.82 and 2:25.43.
Asheville's "A" team of Chris McKoy, Matthew Harding, Kimani Anderson and Tyree McFalling finished 15th in the men's 4x100 meter race, turning in a time of 44.59. On the women's side, the "A" team of Nichols, Argia Gibson, Desire Brown and Jasmine Cox also finished 15th in the event with a time of 48.72.
Chase Stevens had a top-15 finish in the men's 800 meter coming in 11th with a time of 1:56.56.
Desire Brown turned in the fourth-best time all-time for a UNC-Asheville female track athlete when she finished with a time of 25.65 in the women's 200 meter.
Additionally, it was a number three all-time finish for Hunter Koike in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.16.

ABOUT THE TRACK: This weekend marked the start of a new era in Columbia, as the Gamecocks hosted the first ever meet at the newest addition to South Carolina's athletic facilities, one of the fastest surfaces in all of global track and field, the world-class Morris and Sheila Cregger Track.

TEAMS COMPETING: Thirty two schools registered for the meet this weekend including: Appalachian State, Asheville, Ashland, Alabama State, Allen, Anderson, Charleston Southern, Claflin, Coastal Carolina, Coker, College of Charleston, Columbia College, Columbia International, Coppin State, East Tennessee State, Illinois, Marian, Monroe, Morgan State, Morris, North Greenville, Paine, St. Andrew's, St. Augustine's, Savannah State, South Carolina, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State, The Citadel, UNC Greensboro, VMI and Virginia Tech.
PRESEASON PICKS: The Big South Conference released its 2017 Outdoor Track & Field Preseason Polls on Thursday, March 23. The Asheville men's team was picked to finish seventh while the women's squad was picked to finish eighth.
BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE AWARDS: Two Bulldogs picked up big awards at the conclusion of the Big South Indoor Championship with Matthew Harding tying for league Freshman of the Year accolades and Hunter Koike being tabbed as the men's track and field Scholar Athlete of the Year.

UP NEXT: The Bulldog men and women will next head to High Point, N.C., to compete in the Vertklasse Meeting. The meet will be hosted by High Point University March 31-April 1.
