ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Usually when a student-athlete finishes their eligibility the opportunity to compete with their team and program is not there anymore.

That is definitely not the case in the UNC Asheville athletics department, particularly in the month of March with the Bulldog Challenge.

During the month of March, all former student-athletes and Bulldog fans are being challenged to make a gift to UNC Asheville Athletics. Their gift directly impacts today's scholar-athlete by providing scholarships, tutoring and essential academic support that allow your Bulldogs to compete at the highest level.

In 2016, more than 200 student-athlete alumni accepted the Bulldog Challenge, raising more than $20,000 to support current programs and students. Now the Challenge is back for year four and this year is set to be bigger and better than ever. Teams will be competing for highest percentage participation, highest number of alumni contributing and most dollars raised.

Last year, women's soccer led the Challenge in the number of donors, while men's soccer raised the most funds. Swimming took alumni participation with 100 percent of alumni giving back.

The 2017 Bulldog Challenge with 10 days left has already surpassed last year's total with almost $26,000 raised.

As noted, the goal this year for the Bulldog Challenge is much higher and the current tally with 10 days remaining has the challenge 64 percent of the way to the total goal of $40,000.

A Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics for Advancement and Alumni Engagement, Betsy Blose is thrilled with the efforts to help the Bulldog Challenge reach their goal so far.

"Thank you to all the alumni and supporters of UNC Asheville Athletics for their generous gifts to the Bulldog Challenge thus far," Blose said. "We are coming down the stretch. We are 64 percent to our goal of $40,000. It's not too late to accept the Bulldog Challenge and give back to your team. I know I can count on you."

UNC Asheville women's tennis and Bulldog men's soccer have been leading the way so far in the Bulldog Challenge with men's soccer receiving over $6,000 through 35 gifts. Asheville women's tennis has received 30 gifts for the Bulldog Challenge with 28 of the 30 gifts coming from their alumni.

The competitive nature of the Bulldog Challenge is easy to see through both of these programs in their head coaches.

"Thanks to all the alums who have been so supportive of the tennis programs over the years," UNC Asheville women's tennis head coach Lise Gregory said. "Now let's beat soccer."

UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell is incredibly proud of the efforts of those in his program over the years.

"Being at the top of the table year in and year out for the Bulldog Challenge is something that men's soccer and our alumni take very seriously," Mennell said. "UNC Asheville is a special place and our alumni have great reverence for the institution and our program. The support this group of Bulldogs shows on a daily basis is really awe-inspiring and is such a great example for our current players. The men's soccer alumni are just another reason why we are so really blessed to be part of this Bulldog family."

Overall, 198 donors as of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, have given so far to the 2017 Bulldog Challenge that is sponsored by Movement Mortgage, The Winters Team.
