Bulldogs Have Strong First Day at Big South Indoor Championships

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. — The UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams opened competition at the Big South Indoor Championships Saturday afternoon at the JDL Fast Track.

Jason Perry and Patrick Johnston both competed in the men's heptathlon for the Bulldogs. The pair tied for eighth in the 60 meters with a time of 7.67 seconds. Johnston posted 5.48m, 8.04m and 1.67m in the long jump, shot put and high jump competitions. Perry followed with a 5.52m, 7.98m and 1.55m in the competitions. Johnston and Perry finished the afternoon with 2025 and 1935 points, respectively.

Katherine Duquiatan competed in the women's pentathlon for Asheville. Duquiatan started the event by finishing 14th in the 60 meter hurdles, with a time of 9.66. She followed with a 1.49m jump in the high jump. She posted 9.39m and 4.48m in the shot put and long jump competitions, respectively. Duquiatan finished the pentathlon with a time of 2:45.34 in the 800 meters. Duquiatan placed 14th in the pentathlon with 2715 total points.

Amy Castle had a top-10 finish in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:44.52. Kayli Nichols also posted a top-10 finish, coming in eighth place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.89.

Matthew Harding advanced to the finals when he placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.03.

The afternoon concluded with the men's team taking fifth in the 4000m DMR (10:30.76) and the women's team taking sixth (12:48.52).

BULLDOG BITES
SENIORS SHINE: Seniors Amy Castle and Kayli Nichols both posted top-10 finishes on the day in the 3000 meters and 60 meter hurdles.

UP NEXT:  Following this weekend's competition, the Bulldog men and women will have nearly a month break in preparation for the Yellow Jacket Invite. The tournament will be held in Atlanta, Ga. from March 17-18.
