Swimming Wraps Up Friday with Strong Performances

ATHENS, Ga. – Head coach Elizabeth Lykins dubbed Friday "Moving Day" for the UNC Asheville women's swimming team and the Bulldog swimmers did not disappoint as they set 14 lifetime-bests and made serious moves on the rest of the field.
In the morning session alone, nine lifetime-bests were set as were nine season-best times. The Bulldogs secured one A Final position, four B Finals and 10 C Finals, setting Asheville up for a solid points day.
In the Women's 400-Yard IM, freshman Madison Rogan, junior Stephanie Smith and sophomore Sydney VandenBerg all earned positions in the B Finals of the event. Rogan finished her preliminary race in a lifetime-best time of 4:31.79, good enough for 11th. Smith placed 14th in a time of 4:37.71 and VandenBerg finished in a time of 4:40.41 in 16th place. Sophomore Madison Bristow earned a C Finals spot, finishing 23rd in a time of 4:55.20.
The Women's 100-Yard Butterfly saw even more action as freshman Catherine Allen broke the school and freshman record in the event with a lifetime-best time of 57.36. The time was good enough for 17th and earned her a C Finals spot. Also earning a C Finals spot was junior Emily Werth who finished 18th in a time of 57.42, setting a lifetime-best along the way. Senior Emily Sawyer, junior Carly Emerson and sophomore Katie Brown all finished their prelims with season-best times. Sawyer finished in a time of 1:01.49, Emerson in a time of 59.97 and Brown in a time of 59.77.
In the preliminary round of the Women's 200-Yard Freestyle, Adee Weller posted the best time of the Bulldogs with a 17th-place finish in a time of 1:53.38, a season-best for the freshman. She earned a C Finals position along with fellow freshman Skylar Rogan, who posted a lifetime-best time of 1:53.56 and qualified 19th. Junior Alejandra Sanchez Garcia, who finished 20th in a season-best time of 1:54.31, also earned a C Finals berth. Sophomore Elizabeth Conte posted a lifetime-best time in the 200 Free, finishing her prelim in a time of 1:57.91 while Junior Brittany Thomas had a solid race, finishing with a season-best time of 2:00.43.
In the Women's 100-Yard Breaststroke, sophomore Morgan Rulevich continued her strong week by earning another A Finals berth with a fourth-place time of 1:03.47. Juniors Shannon Kennedy and Emerson both earned C Finals spots, recording the 23rd and 24th-best times of 1:08.18 and 1:08.41, respectively. Both Kennedy and Emerson's times were season-bests. Sophomore Emma Nelson just missed out on a C Finals spot, finishing 25th in a time of 1:08.46, but earned an alternate position with her lifetime-best in the event.
Junior Emily Werth raced her way into a B-Finals spot with the 14th-best time in the Women's 100-Yard Backstroke with a lifetime-best of 56.89. The time also proved to be a school record for the event. Sanchez and sophomre Emma Nelson both earned C Finals berths with the 23rd and 24th-best times in the preliminary round. Sanchez cruised home in a time of 58.55 while Nelson finished in a time of 58.88. Both times were lifetime-bests for the swimmers. Jessica Woolfe earned herself an alternate position with the 26th-fastest time of 58.99 and senior Reid Jackson and sophomore Katie Brown both had respectable finishes of 1:00.15 and 1:02.82.
In the evening session, Smith started the night by claiming the B Final of the 400 IM, finishing ninth overall in with a lifetime-best of 4:30.05. M. Rogan came home 12th, VandenBerg 16th and Madison-Grace Bristow ended up 24th.
In the 100-Yard Fly, Allen broke her own school and freshman record with a time of 57.14, finishing 18th while Werth finished 24th.
Weller placed second in the C Final of the 200 Free, earning valuable points with a lifetime-best of 1:53.16. S. Rogan finished third in the C Final in a time of 1:53.45 and Sanchez-Garcia came home fourth in the C Final in a time of 1:53.45.
The 100-Yard Breaststroke featured Rulevich finishing sixth in the A Final with a time of 1:03.87. Kennedy finished 21st overall with a season-best of 1:07.45 and Emerson cruised home 23rd overall.
In the 100-Yard Backstroke, Werth finished 16th, Sanchez-Garcia 18th and Nelson posted a lifetime-best of 58.82 while finishing 23rd. Sanchez-Garcia posted a lifetime best of 57.55.
The night was capped by a new school record being set in the 400-Yard Medley Relay with a time of 3:50.51. The relay was made up of Werth, Rulevich, Allen and Woolfe and the quartet finished fifth. Werth posted a split of 56.99, Rulevich's split was 1:03.48, Allen's 57.63 and Woolfe finished with a 52.31 split.

POSTING LIFETIME BESTS: The Bulldogs posted 14 lifetime bests in the pool. There were nine in the morning session alone.
INSIDE THE RANKINGS: The Bulldogs finished Wednesday's lone session in seventh and then moved up a spot Thursday to sixth. Friday, the Bulldogs fell a spot to seventh, but are within striking distance of sixth.
