Bulldogs Ready to Compete at Big South Cross Country Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville cross country team will compete at the 2017 Big South Conference Cross Country Championships this weekend.

This year's Big South championships will be held at the Liberty Cross Country Course. The Bulldogs will be competing on the course for the second time this season as they also took part in the Liberty Big South Preview on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The men's 8K portion of the championships will get started at 10:30 a.m., while the women's 5K is slated for an 11:30 a.m. start.

After the awards ceremony there is also an open 5K on the women's course free of charge for anyone that wants to participate.

Bulldogs at the Liberty Big South Preview
Both the UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams put together strong team performances at the Liberty Big South Preview on Saturday, Sept. 16. 

The UNC Asheville men's cross country team finished in second in the 8K at the Liberty Big South Preview with a point total of 71. Liberty took top honors in the men's race with a total of 19 points. 

Senior Dominic Collichio was the top finisher for the Bulldogs with a time of 28:20.5. The time earned him a 14th-place finish. The Bulldogs had three runners finish in the top-20 in total with Zach Boone finishing 18th with a time of 28:28.8 and Hunter Newman taking 20th with a time of 28:33.2. David Hager just missed on a top-20 finish with a 21st-place finish with a time of 28:35.4. Quin Meyer was right behind in 22nd with a time of 28:46.7, while Blanton Gillespie finished 25th with a time of 28:57.9.

In the women's 5K, the Bulldogs closed things out with a third place finish as a team. The Bulldogs ended their efforts with 84 points. High Point claimed top honors with 19 total points, while Liberty was in second with 43 total points.

UNC Asheville's Kamryn DeCarmo picked up a top-10 finish with a time of 19:52.2 to finish 10th overall. Three Bulldogs finished in the top-20 overall with Kelley Coleman's time of 19:54.6 giving her a 13th-place finish. Phoebe Schneider finished in 17th with a time of 20:10.7.

Checking Out the Course (via Liberty)
The Liberty Cross Country Course is located adjacent to the Liberty Indoor Track Complex, which is beneath the LU monogram off of Candlers Mountain Road. The road leading back to the course may be found directly across the street from the Fairfield Inn & Suites. The hotel's address is 3777 Candlers Mountain Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502.

Most of the course is located in the wooded area between the Liberty Indoor Track Complex and Route 460. The 5K course includes one small loop (approximately one mile) and one large loop (approximately two miles). The 8K course follows the 5K course before making a second lap around the large loop.

The course features numerous hills and is not conducive to fast times. 

Last Time Out
Both the UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams put together strong days at the ECU Pirate Invitational at the Overton's Lake Kristi course on Friday, Oct. 13.

The UNC Asheville men's cross country team finished fourth with a team time average of 26:01.46 in the 8K run. Duke claimed top honors on the men's side with a 24:51.35 team time average.
 
Dominic Collichio was the top finisher for the Bulldogs at the event with a time of 25:33.96. The time was good for a 25th-place finish.
 
Three Bulldogs finished in the top-35 in total with Thomas Little ending his day in 33rd with a time of 26:03.82. David Hager was right behind in 34th with a time of 26:05.97.
 
In the women's 6K, UNC Asheville ended their day in sixth place with a team time average of 24:17.21. College of Charleston finished first on the women's side of things with a team time average of 22:20.54.
 
Two Bulldogs finished in the top-15 with Phoebe Schneider 13th with a time of 22:31.08 and Kelley Coleman 15th with a time of 22:37.10.

Strong Showing in Asheville
The UNC Asheville men's cross country team won the 2017 Asheville Cross Country Invitational at Asheville Christian Academy on Saturday, Sept. 23.

The Bulldogs in the four-mile run picked up top honors at their lone home meet of the year with a team time average of 21:08.39. Western Carolina finished second with a team time average of 21:21.29. Lenoir-Rhyne was third with a team time average of 21:26.26.

The winner of last year's event, UNC Asheville's Dominic Collichio with a time of 20:38.88 finished fourth this year. He was just behind the top finisher in the men's four-mile run in Carson-Newman's Luke Greer, who finished with a time of 20:15.91. Montreat's Brien Lancaster was second with a time of 20:34.98, while Lenoir-Rhyne's Jacob Black was third with a time of 20:37.91.

Three Bulldogs ended their efforts in the top-10 in total with David Hager ninth with a time of 21:08.38 and Zach Boone 10th with a time of 21:08.79.

In the women's two-mile run, UNC Asheville finished fourth with a time average of 12:17.20 as a team. Wofford picked up two honors with a team time average of 11:49.34. Western Carolina was second with an 11:58.00 team time average and Milligan was third with a team time average of 12:08.02.

UNC Asheville's Kamryn DeCarmo had the top individual finish for the Bulldogs with a fourth-place finish with a time of 11:52.68. Wofford's Hannah Steelman picked up top honors with a time of 10:51.21. Western Carolina's Hannah Lingard was second with a time of 11:37.28 and Christina Nikolaou of Western Carolina was third with a time of 11:48.92.

Two Bulldogs finished in the top-10 in total with Kelley Coleman ending her day in 10th with a time of 11:59.39.
