Final Non-Conference Matchup
UNC Asheville's home match against Georgia State is the final non-conference match of the year for the Bulldogs with the final four games on the schedule all Big South Conference games.
About Georgia State
Georgia State makes its way to Greenwood Field owning a record of 9-4 overall on the 2017 season. The Panthers are 2-0 on the year in the Sun Belt Conference. Georgia State's biggest win of the season came on Tuesday, Sept. 5, when they knocked off No. 2 Wake Forest, 2-1, in overtime in Winston-Salem, N.C. Rashid Alarape leads the way for the Panthers with eight goals on the season.
Academically Strong
Both the UNC Asheville men's and women's soccer teams were once again honored for their strong work in the classroom in the 2016-17 season. In fact, UNC Asheville was one of only 197 institutions in all of college soccer to have both their men's and women's soccer programs recognized by the United Soccer Coaches. Altogether, a total of 816 soccer teams (283 men, 533 women) posted a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 academic year.
"Receiving the Team Academic Award from the United Soccer Coaches – formerly the NSCAA – is a great honor, and I think it is something that really speaks to the mindset of our student-athletes with the great emphasis on the 'student' part," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "NCAA Division I athletics is an extremely difficult endeavor, and to be able to balance trying to be excellent on the field and at the same time being excellent in the classroom, is a great accomplishment. I could not be more proud of our guys embodying the term student-athlete. For us to win this two years in a row speaks a great deal to the commitment not only from them in how they approach their studies, but also to our university supporting the student-athletes with the wonderful academic support they receive from not only here in the athletic department, but with the university community in general. It's a great honor for our program, but I think it speaks really highly of what we're doing here at UNC Asheville."
Quotable
"This is a great Georgia State team coming to Greenwood Field. They are a very good team that we have played every year since I have been here. Coach Surrency does a great job, and they've done an excellent job as a team with a great record with some great results like a win over Howard over the weekend, which is a team that gave Appalachian State fits. They've also certainly got a signature win by going to Wake Forest and winning. It's a great matchup for our guys. It should be a great midweek matchup, especially for us in that it's kind of our last dress rehearsal before the Big South stretch run and we all know how important these remaining four games are to put ourselves in position to compete for the Big South Tournament. The Big South is moving, and we've got to make sure we're ready to go. We're hoping that we can kind of clean up a couple of things before we go play a very tough Longwood team on Saturday. The opportunity to play good teams at home is a great opportunity for our guys and our fans." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
