JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite an early 1-0 lead off a goal from Ben Chapal, the UNC Asheville men's soccer team fell to Jacksonville University, 1-0, Saturday evening at Southern Oak Stadium.
UNC Asheville (0-3) found the back of the net first with 33:51 to go in the first half when a cross from the right side of the 18-yard box from Andrew Lawrence found Ben Chapal, who headed the ball past the JU defense into the left side of the goal.
A lightning delay caused the game to pause with 18:18 left before the intermission, but despite the delay, JU's Kai Bennett tipped in the equalizer from Ignazio Muccilli to knot the game at 1-1 with 3:10 to go before halftime.
The slippery conditions were not conducive to either team's efforts in the second half, and with just 2:01 remaining in the game, the Dolphins' Joe Amico found Alberto Escobedo for the game-winner.
NOTABLES
- Chris Katt tallied eight saves between the pipes for the Bulldogs, while his counterpart Patrick Harding finished with two saves for JU (1-3).
-Chapal's goal was his first of 2016 and his second wearing a Bulldog uniform.
QUOTABLES
"I am disappointed in the result, but not in our effort. We were on the right track to play the way we wanted to be playing in the first half, and it was frustrating to have to pause due to the lightning delay. When we returned to the field 40 minutes later, the weather had taken our momentum. These are hard lessons to learn and certainly bitter pills to swallow early in the season, but its part of the process and it's what makes us better. We're looking forward to getting out there on Monday against Stetson."– Head coach Mathes Mennell
UP NEXT
- The Bulldogs return to action on Monday, September 5 when they head to Stetson University to take on the Hatters at 1:00 p.m.
