Bulldogs Start Strong at 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UNC Asheville opened the 49er Classic on Friday afternoon with a productive day on both the men's and women's sides, turning in good performances relative to Friday's competition and the Bulldog all-time record books.
NOTABLES
-Kayli Nichols had a busy day, setting a school record in the 100 meter hurdle prelims with her time of 14.52 seconds to advance to Saturday's finals and also advancing to the 400 meter hurdle finals after a prelim time of 1:03.10, a mark that now ranks second all-time at UNC Asheville.
-Argia Gibson's 5.63 meter distance gave her a second place finish in the long jump.
-Kimani Anderson's 50.37 second time in the men's 400 meter prelims becomes the No. 4 all-time best mark, while Scarlett Beamon (No. 3) and Lana Reeves (No. 4) put new times in the record books in Friday's steeplechase. Beamon finished 10th overall with her time of 12:08.99, with Reeves steps behind in 11th with her time of 12:10.78. Katie Gamble finished 15th in the event with her time of 13:03.60.
-Kelsie Rubino led a total of seven Bulldog runners in the women's 1500, finishing seventh overall with a time of 4:41.79, while Alyssa Lashway (37th, 4:59.18) and Erin Dalton (40th, 4:59.71) also had sub-five minute marks.
-The men's 1500 race featured 11 Asheville runners, led by Andy Thornburg's 4:01.61 time (25th), while Blanton Gillespie (31st, 4:02.88) David Hader (35th, 4:04.61) and Dominic Collichio (36th, 4:04.76) were right behind.
-A pair of Bulldog women turned in solid times in the women's 5K, with Sarah Heisner finishing 11th overall with her time of 17:47.53 and Casey Greenwalt (18:28.35) finishing 21st.

-Saturday's day two action begins at 10:00 a.m. with concurrent field and running events, wrapping up in the late afternoon with the running final events and distance races.
