Cross Country Opens With Pair of Second Place Finishes

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville cross country teams both turned in second place finishes as they opened the season on Saturday morning. The men placed five runners in the top 15 and three inside the top 10, while the women had a pair of runners in the top 10 and five top-20 finishes.
THE TURNING POINT
On the men's side, the Bulldogs were edged for first place by host Western Carolina by a single point. Asheville had more runners in the top 15, but the Catamounts saw runners finish in first and second place. The women's race saw winner the College of Charleston place five runners inside the top 10.
NOTABLES
-Dominic Collichio (15:47.29) and Andy Thornburg (15:55.70) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the men's race to pace the Bulldogs. Nathan Kirse (16:13.31, 10th) also finished inside the top 10.
-Collichio was less than five seconds off the top time of the day by J.C. Cornett of Western Carolina.
-Kelsie Rubino (11:38.70) and Sarah Heisner (11:42.24) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the women's race to lead Asheville.
-The final team standings in the two races were opposites, with the men finishing 21 points ahead of third place after being one point off the top team total, while on the women's side, College of Charleston ran away with the meet, but the Asheville's second place finish was just two points ahead of third place in their race.

-Following today races, the Bulldogs now prepare to host the UNC Asheville Invitational on September 19.
