HARRISONBURG, VA – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team's Friday night match at James Madison was halted with 38:19 remaining with the score tied at 0-0. Since the match did not eclipse 70 minutes, by NCAA rule, the game has been declared a no contest and the match will not count statistically or on the teams' records. The game will not be rescheduled.
THE TURNING POINT
Lightning within the area caused the initial delay of play in the 52nd minute before heavy rains came, forcing the 'no contest' call.
NOTABLES
Despite no statistics counting towards season totals, here's a look at some notes:
-The Bulldogs recorded five shots, including a pair from Andrew Sotak, who had the only Asheville shot on goal.
-Asheville goalkeeper Zak Davis tallied five saves at the stoppage.
-Both teams tallied five corners during play.
-Asheville remains at 2-0 on the season. The last time the Bulldogs opened a season 2-0 was at the beginning of the 2001 campaign, a season in which Asheville would go on and win the Big South Regular Season Championship.
QUOTABLES
“Overall I thought the game was a good learning experience for us, despite not getting a result in, but the safety and welfare of the student-athletes is paramount. I give full credit to JMU's facilities staff, they did a great job of working every angle to try to get the game in. I thought JMU was physically superior, so it was a good learning experience for our guys to have to deal with that type of game. During the second half I thought we were on a pretty good track to a good result, but the weather came in. This is the first time this has ever happened to me in my career. The 52 minutes we played was a good result. Looking forward to what should be an awesome opportunity to see where we are against Wake Forest next week.” - Head Coach Mathes Mennell
UP NEXT
-Asheville will prepare to travel to Wake Forest on Tuesday night. The next Bulldog home match will be when they begin Big South Conference play against High Point on September 26.
