CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A pair of UNC Asheville athletic programs were recognized with team sportsmanship awards as the Big South Conference announced its annual Institutional Sportsmanship Award for the 2014-15 athletic season.
The Bulldog men's soccer team and baseball team were both recognized in their individual sports, while UNC Asheville finished third overall in total institutional percentage. The overall winner is determined on a system that recognizes the highest percentage of the maximum points an institution is capable of receiving for each team award. The team awards were voted on by Big South student-athletes following each conference championship.
Liberty earned top honors and earned seven team sportsmanship awards in 2014-15 with a 36.20 percentage of the maximum points received in its sponsored league sports. The Flames were voted by Big South student-athletes as the top sportsmanship team in men's basketball, women's cross country, women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's soccer, men's tennis and volleyball. Gardner-Webb finished second with a 32.29 percentage, followed by Asheville at 26.23 percent and High Point at 25.06 percent.
“Sportsmanship and Fair Play are core values of the Big South Conference and its members,” said Big South Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander. “The Institutional Sportsmanship Award is one of our most significant honors as it recognizes the institution that has most consistently upheld these values and conducted its athletics program in a sportsmanlike manner.”
