The Opposition
ALABAMA A&M (1-7)
Rose Powell is in her second season with Alabama A&M after guiding the Bulldogs to a 12-18 record in her first year at the helm. Prior to coaching at Alabama A&M, Powell compiled 367 wins at Martin Methodist. She was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball team that won silver in Los Angeles.
The lone win so far this season for the Bulldogs came at a tournament in Jacksonville State. On Sept. 4, the Bulldogs knocked off fellow SWAC foe, Alcorn State in four sets.
NEW ORLEANS (3-3)
The Privateers capped off their opening weekend with a 1-2 mark, falling to Providence and Eastern Washington before picking up a victory over La Salle. Kaitlyn Grice had 26 kills on the weekend including 14 in the finale while posting a .420 attack percentage and five service aces. Grice also leads the team in blocks with 18 through the first six matches.
Samantha Uline set a new mark for kills in her young collegiate career, recording 11 in the Privateers' victory last weekend. Uline also has 40 digs, tied for second most on the team and her seven aces have contributed to a New Orleans service game that ranks second in the Southland in aces per set (2.0).
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE (0-4)
South Carolina State is carrying a thin roster in number into the 2015 season with just nine players on the roster. Of those nine players, six are freshmen or sophomores. Head Coach Valerie Jones is in her third season at South Carolina State and had the distinction of being the first ever volleyball coach in Kennesaw State's history in 2006.
South Carolina State opened the season last weekend with three losses at a tournament in High Point. The Bulldogs picked off one set in their weekend finale against Loyola-Maryland. Kirby Anderson posted 31 kills and nine blocks in the opening weekend.
THE CITADEL (2-5)
Moriah Smith has racked up the kills in bunches for Citadel, posting 122 in the first seven matches of the season. Smith's highest mark of the year came against SE Missouri State when she slammed 27 kills in 64 attempts. She has 84 more attempts than Bailey Kernodle who stands second with 243 attempts.
Of the seven matches this season, just one went in three sets. The last two matches Citadel was involved in went the full distance as they defeated Gardner-Webb in five sets, but lost to SE Missouri State in five. Coach Craig Mosqueda is in his first season at the helm.
