ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team came from a goal down on Sunday to grab a 2-1 victory over visiting LIU Brooklyn, moving the Bulldogs to 2-0 in 2015.
THE TURNING POINT
Zach Joens scored on a free kick from just outside the box in the 60th minute to tie the game up in the second half and swing momentum towards Asheville. The Bulldogs later got the game-winning goal from Ben Chapel in the 72nd minute off of an assist from A.J. Iiames.
NOTABLES
-Asheville opens the season 2-0 after a pair of two-goal games. The last time the Bulldogs opened a season 2-0 was at the beginning of the 2001 campaign, a season in which Asheville would go on and win the Big South Regular Season Championship.
-A chippy game throughout, the match featured four yellow cards (3 LIU, 1 AVL) and one red card (LIU, 6th minute), forcing the visitors to play a man down for the majority of the afternoon.
-Zach Joens recorded his second goal in as many games for Asheville after entering the season with zero career goals.
-Asheville has now recorded seven shots in both games this season, while goalkeeper Zak Davis has recorded five saves in each of the two wins.
-The Bulldogs are now 2-0 all-time against LIU Brooklyn after Sunday's win and a 2-1 double overtime victory in the 2003 season.
QUOTABLES
“I thought it was a very impressive team win for us against a very physical team. In the second half we did a good job initiating the point of attack and we had two classy goals. Today was another positive step forward and these types of battles will prepare us for the Big South. Overall, I am pleased that we came back and won in front of our home fans. I am excited for where we are going and for the players to have found two wins in two games. We certainly have a lot to work on, but this was another positive step forward.” - Head Coach Mathes Mennell
UP NEXT
-Asheville now goes on a five-game road swing that will last nearly a month, beginning at James Madison on Friday. The next Bulldog home match will come in 27 days when they begin Big South Conference play against High Point on September 26.
