ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team will play its first of six total home games on Sunday, welcoming LIU Brooklyn to Greenwood Field. Asheville is coming off of a 2-0 victory to open the season at USC Upstate, while LIU Brooklyn were 3-1 winners at Presbyterian in their opener.

NOTABLES

-Friday's win was the first head coaching victory for new Asheville head man Mathes Mennell. Mennell was named the Bulldogs' head coach in January after spending the last 19 years as an assistant.

-Neither of Friday's goal scorers – Zach Joens and Andrew Lawrence – recorded a goal in 2014. Both goals were the first for the players in their career wearing the Blue and White.

-The last time the Bulldogs opened a season 2-0 was at the beginning of the 2001 campaign, a season in which Asheville would go on and win the Big South Regular Season Championship.

-Asheville won the last meeting between these two teams, 2-1 in double overtime, in October 2003. Today marks the second all-time matchup between LIU Brooklyn and the Bulldogs.

-LIU Brooklyn head coach TJ Kostecky, now in his 17th season, notched his 100th career victory on Friday night in the Blackbird's win at Presbyterian.

QUOTABLES

“LIU Brooklyn is a very good team coming off a good result against Presbyterian. They are well-organized, well-coached, and they are one of the best teams in the Northeast Conference. I think it will be a good opportunity for us to continue our progress. We have to continue to pass the ball well and continue to stick to the things we are trying to work on as a program. I am excited for our fans to be able to see us play at home in what should be a very entertaining match.” - Head Coach Mathes Mennell

UP NEXT

- Following today's game against LIU Brooklyn, Asheville goes on a five-game road swing that will last nearly a month. The next Bulldog home match will come in 27 days when they begin Big South Conference play against High Point on September 26.
