ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will play inside the Justice Center 12 times this fall, which includes seven Big South Conference matches, as the team's 2015 schedule was released this afternoon.
The Bulldogs will also host the UNC Asheville Invitational on September 10, 11 and 12 as part of their schedule, welcoming four visiting teams to town that weekend.
In total, 11 of Asheville's 12 total home matches will be played on Fridays and Saturdays, giving fans a prime opportunity to catch the Bulldogs in action. Six of the seven Big South home matchups are weekend 'doubleheaders' with Asheville hosting a 7 p.m. Friday night contest followed by a 2 p.m. match on Saturday afternoon.
“I look forward to the challenge of the Big South Conference. The league boasts two teams ranked in the top 80 in the country in Radford and Coastal Carolina. The league has become very competitive and our team will look to build on our late success last season and keep challenging the conference,” head coach Frederico Santos stated.
“This team has grown since last season and the expectation is to improve back to where we know we can be and get into the Big South Conference Tournament. Our players are intent on getting back into the mix and competing for a championship.”
The Bulldogs open the season on August 28 and 29 with three matches at the UNC Charlotte Invitational, taking on USC Upstate, Davidson College and the tournament-host 49ers, before returning to the Justice Center for their first home contest of the season on Friday, September 4 against local foe Montreat College.
A trip to regional rival Western Carolina comes on September 8 before the Bulldogs welcome four teams – the University of New Orleans, The Citadel, Alabama A&M and South Carolina State – to campus for the UNC Asheville Invitational on September 10, 11 and 12. In the tournament, the Bulldogs will square off against all four teams (UNO – Sept. 10, The Citadel & Alabama A&M – Sept. 11, South Carolina State – Sept. 12) as part of the tournament's nine total matchups over the three days.
Asheville hits the road and heads to The Citadel Tournament on September 19 and 20, taking on The Citadel (Sept. 19) for the second week in a row, as well as Wright State (Sept. 20) and the University of North Florida (Sept. 20).
Big South Conference play begins on Friday, September 25 when the Bulldogs host Gardner-Webb. Asheville hits the road for contests at Radford (Oct. 2) and Liberty (Oct. 3) before returning home to take on Winthrop (Oct. 9) and Presbyterian (Oct. 10).
The Bulldogs will play three-straight road matches, at Gardner-Webb (Oct. 16), Charleston Southern (Oct. 23) and Coastal Carolina (Oct. 24), and then return to Asheville for home contests against High Point on October 30 and Campbell on October 31. The final regular season road trip comes on November 6 and 7 at Presbyterian and Winthrop.
Asheville wraps up the regular season at home on November 13 against Liberty and November 14 when they host Radford. The Big South Tournament runs November 19-22 in High Point.
