Bulldogs Open Day One of Indoor Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The opening day of the 2015 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday saw the UNC Asheville men's and women's distance squads put together nice finishes as well as some outstanding individual performances from the women's squad.
The distance medley teams each finished fourth for the Bulldogs, as the men's team of Dominic Collichio, Patrick Osborne, Caleb Smith and Andy Thornburg turned in a time of 10:30.64 in the finals, while the women's team finished the finals with a time of 12:30.47 by Sarah Heisner, Zoe Hickey, Maddie Lowe and Amy Castle.
Individually, the highlight of the day came in the women's 800 meter prelims, as the Bulldogs saw a two athletes finish inside the top 10 and advance to tomorrow's finals. Casey Greenwalt was less than three seconds off the pace as she finished third overall with her time of 2:19.05, while Kelsie Rubino followed right behind her with a time of 2:19.28 to place eighth.
In the women's long jump finals, Argia Gibson tallied a distance of 5.46 meters to finish seventh, while Erin Dalton (10:32.45) and Adrian Etheridge (10:36.19) finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the finals of the women's 3000 meter run.
After the opening day of competition, the Asheville women's team currently sits in eighth place with eight total team points and the Bulldog men's team is currently sixth with five total team points. Liberty sits atop both the men's and women's team standings heading into day two action.
The action continues to heat up on Friday in the final day of competition slated to include the high jump, triple jump, 5000 meter run and 1600 meter relays, as well as the finals for the 60 meters, 200 meters and 800 meters. Action begins at 10:00 a.m. at the JDL Fast Track.
