Bulldog Volleyball No. 4 Seed, Face Winthrop Thursday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team now knows its postseason path as the Bulldogs are the No. 4 seed in this week's Big South Volleyball Championship and will face No. 5 Winthrop on Thursday in the tournament's opening round.

 

Asheville lost both regular season matches to Winthrop, as the Eagles were the only Big South opponent to beat the Bulldogs twice this season. Thursday's postseason contest will begin at 2:30 p.m. and will be available on the Big South Network.

 

Thursday's meeting will be the 11th postseason matchup between the Bulldogs and Eagles. Asheville is 3-8 all-time against Winthrop but won the teams' last postseason meeting in 2008. Overall, the Bulldogs are 15-10 in the BSC Quarterfinals and own an overall Big South tournament record of 20-22 with a pair of tournament championships (1991, 1992) and three tournament runners-up finishes (2003, 2005, 2006). The last Bulldog postseason win came in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Big South tournament when Asheville defeated High Point 3-2 in Boiling Springs.

 

Coastal Carolina earned the No. 1 seed after finishing the 2015 regular-season with a 14-0 Big South record to win the Big South regular-season title for the first time since 2008. High Point finished its season with an 11-3 Big South record to earn the No. 2 seed. Liberty will receive the No. 3 seed with a conference record of 9-5, giving Asheville (8-6) the fourth seed.  Winthrop lands the No. 5 seed following its 7-7 conference season.

 

Radford and Campbell tied for sixth in the Bix South standings at 6-8 as the Highlanders receive the No. 6 seed with its pair of regular season wins over the Fighting Camels. Charleston Southern rounds out the seeding at No. 8 following its 4-10 conference mark.

 

The 2015 Big South Volleyball Championship presented by Musco Lighting begins Thursday, Nov. 19 with four quarterfinal matches and concludes with the Championship match on Sunday, Nov. 22. The Big South's Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Championship. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be live streamed for free on the Big South Network, while the Championship will be broadcast live on ESPN3 for the fourth consecutive year.
