ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In the midst of a three-game road trip, the UNC Asheville men's soccer team takes to Rock Hill, S.C., for a Saturday night matchup against the Winthrop Eagles. Kickoff from Eagle Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be available live on the Big South Network.
The Bulldogs will look to rebound following a 3-1 loss at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. Winthrop remains perfect in conference play (3-0-0) and is coming off a 1-0 victory over No. 25 Radford on Tuesday.
NOTABLES
- Junior Zach Joens leads the Bulldogs with five goals this season, including scoring Asheville's lone goal in a 3-1 loss to Gardner-Webb on Wednesday.
- Senior goalkeeper Zak Davis paces the conference and also ranks 12th nationally in total saves (58). His 5.80 saves per game ranks fourth in the country while also leading the Big South.
- Asheville has seen four different players score the game-winning goals in the Bulldogs' four victories this season (Andrew Lawrence, Chuka Anyafo, Ben Chapel, Cy Gourlay).
- Under first-year head coach Mathes Mennell, the Bulldogs have taken steps in the right direction. Asheville upset then-no. 4 Coastal Carolina at home Oct. 11 to give the Bulldogs their first victory over a ranked opponent since defeating then-no. 6 Coastal on Nov. 2, 2013.
- Asheville is 2-2-1 in its last five meetings against Winthrop. The teams played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in last season's only matchup (Oct. 18, 2014).
QUOTABLE
"Winthrop is undefeated in conference so it will be a great test for us. It's a game that should be a good football match. We suffered a little bit of a lull against Gardner-Webb but full credit to them. They were very good in making the game difficult for us and did a good job scoring goals when we presented them to them. We've got to do a better job of limiting opponents' chances and, on the flip side, making sure we take care of our chances when we get them. It should be an entertaining football match, both teams are very fun and have an entertaining style of play. I'm excited to see how our guys respond to the loss. We've been a little bit inconsistent but hat's to be expecetd with a yuong group. The inconsistencies have become less and less as the season's gone on." - head coach Mathes Mennell
UP NEXT
- The Bulldogs conclude their three-game road trip on Tuesday, Oct. 20, traveling to Williamsburg, Va., to take on William & Mary at 7 p.m.
