ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Andrew Starnes provided the lone goal on the afternoon to lift the VMI Keydets to a 1-0 victory over UNC Asheville on Friday afternoon at TC Roberson High School.
Asheville falls to 1-1-1 on the year, while VMI improves to 1-2-0.
Starnes netted the game-winner in the 64th minute, driving his shot low past a diving Dan Jackson and into the far corner after fighting off a pair of defenders down the right side.
The Bulldogs mounted a comeback effort and nearly answered in 77th minute on Victor Aguiar's volley from just outside the box, however, his attempt sailed just high. Asheville continued to pressure the VMI goal with a pair of shots (79th and 85th minute) from Emil Gonsalves with the second effort striking the post before rolling harmlessly out of play.
Dan Jackson finished with a game-high five saves, while VMI goalkeeper, Zach Kaplan stopped four shots. Aguiar led all players with five shots, while Blake McCauley attempted a team-high three shots for the Keydets.
Tevin Beckwith and Jackson Allen combined to create Asheville's best opportunity of the first half, as the two linked up with a give-and-go leading to a shot from just inside the penalty area by Allen which skidded wide of the VMI net.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday when they host Jacksonville University at 1:00 p.m. at Greenwood field.
