ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Home games with Charlotte and Western Carolina plus an opening night assignment at Wake Forest highlights the 2014-15 UNC Asheville men's basketball schedule that was announced today by second-year coach Nick McDevitt.
“We are looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead with a tough non-conference schedule this season,” stated McDevitt. “We have games vs. teams from the ACC, SEC, AAC and two from Conference USA. Playing teams of that caliber will help prepare our team for Big South play.
“Our 2014-15 schedule allows our Bulldog fans to support our team for some exciting games, both at Kimmel Arena and on the road,” declared McDevitt. “We welcome Charlotte and Western Carolina back to Asheville this season, but we also have games at Wake Forest, South Carolina and ETSU that will be easy distances for our fans to travel.”
The Bulldogs overcame a tough early-season schedule and numerous injuries to post a 17-15 overall record last year. Asheville advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Tournament for the seventh time in the last eight years.
The Bulldogs will play one exhibition game to prepare for the upcoming year and that will be against Brevard College at Kimmel Arena on Nov. 8.
Asheville opens the season in Winston-Salem when the Bulldogs face Wake Forest at Joel Coliseum on Nov. 14. It will be the first game for Demon Deacon head coach Danny Manning. The Bulldogs journey to East Carolina two days later (Nov. 16) for their first road game with the Pirates since the 1997-98 season.
Asheville's home opener will be a first-time meeting with Johnson & Wales at Kimmel Arena (Nov. 19) before another two-game road swing at East Tennessee State (Nov. 22) and South Carolina (Nov. 26).
The Bulldogs will have a three-game homestand starting with a Kimmel Arena contest against Charlotte (Nov. 30). It will be the 49ers' first game on the Asheville campus since the 1969-70 season. Asheville follows up with home contests vs. Limestone (Dec. 7) and Tusculum (Dec. 11).
Prior to Christmas, McDevitt's club visits the state of Alabama for two contests. The Bulldogs face UAB (Dec. 14) for the first time ever and then make a first-time visit to Jacksonville State (Dec. 16).
Asheville's final home game before the holidays will be its annual battle with mountain rival Western Carolina on Dec. 21.
The Bulldogs open Big South Conference play at Radford on New Year's Eve before returning home for three consecutive league games. Asheville hosts Gardner-Webb (Jan. 3), Liberty (Jan. 8) and Winthrop (Jan. 14).
The Blue & White return to the road for league games at Campbell (Jan. 17) and Charleston Southern (Jan. 19) followed by a home game vs. defending BSC champion Coastal Carolina (Jan. 22) and back out on the road vs. High Point (Jan. 24) and Longwood (Jan. 28).
Asheville finishes the first month of 2015 with a home game vs. Campbell (Jan. 31) and begins February at Coastal Carolina (Feb. 3).
The Bulldogs finish the regular season with two of their last three games at Kimmel Arena, including a homecoming date with Radford (Feb. 21) and last year's Big South regular-season champion High Point (Feb. 26). Asheville completes the regular season with a game at Liberty (Feb. 28).
The Bulldogs will then compete in the Big South Conference Championship at Coastal Carolina the week of March 4-9.
