HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team dropped its conference opener, Saturday night against High Point University, 3-0 at Vert Stadium.
The Bulldogs fall to 1-4-1 overall and 0-1 in Big South action, while the Panthers improve to 3-3-1 on year and 1-0 in league play.
"I did not have our guys prepared to deal with a match played at this pace," stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern.
High Point jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime following a 19th minute goal scored by Renato Punyed and a 34th minute solo effort by Mamadee Nyepon.
Tevin Beckwith had the best opportunity of the half for the Bulldogs after he dispossessed an HPU defender just outside the 18-yard box. Beckwith was unable to capitalize after his one-on-one effort went just high over the cross bar.
Quentin Reyonlds led Asheville with two shots in the half. Punyed led the Panthers with three first half shots. Dan Jackson recorded one save in the half, while his counterpart David Price also recorded on stop in the first half.
High Point added a third goal in the 60th minute when Avery Ryan found the back of the net. Asheville threatened to grab a goal late in the half when Cole Schwietering lofted a cross into the box searching for the run of Zach Joens. Joens and HPU goalkeeper David Price collided in the air and the ball bounced harmlessly out of play.
Reynolds finished the match as the leading shot taker for the Bulldogs while Punyed and Ebe Kudolo finished with a match-high, four shots each. Jackson stopped a game-high three shots, while Price only required one stop for the Panthers.
The Bulldogs return home to Greenwood field for the first time in nearly a month, when Radford travels to Asheville for a 5 p.m. match on Wednesday, October 1.
