ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team opens up Big South Conference play on Saturday night at High Point starting at 7 p.m. The contest between the Panthers and Bulldogs is the NSCAA Game of the Week and will be broadcast live on NSCAA.TV.

Asheville (1-3-1) has not played since it participated in the Springhill Suites Invitational at Georgia Southern two weeks ago (Sept. 12-14). The Bulldogs fell to Mercer 3-0 on Sept. 12 and 3-0 to Georgia Southern on Sept. 14. This will be Asheville's first match in 13 days.

High Point is coming off a 2-1 loss to West Virginia Wednesday night and have a 2-3-1 worksheet coming into Saturday's contest. The Panthers have not lost to Asheville since the 2005 season when the Bulldogs recorded a 3-0 decision at Greenwood Field.

Pat Shelton's goal in the 109th minute gave High Point a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs last year at Greenwood Field. In season of tough losses, this might have been the toughest of the year. The Panthers out-shot Asheville, 20-8, but the Bulldogs just missed winning the match late in regulation and in the first overtime period. In the 85th minute, Quentin Reynolds shot from inside the box appeared to be going into the right corner until a High Point defender knocked the ball away at the last second. In overtime, Kenneth Lingerfelt's shot in the 95th minute hit the cross bar and then the right goal post. The ball bounced to teammate Emil Gonsalvez. His shot was knocked away by Panther goalkeeper Kody Palmer at the last second.

“We are very excited to open Big South play at High Point on Saturday night,” stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern. “It should be an entertaining match in an environment that all players enjoy.”

Sophomore transfer Jackson Allen leads Asheville in scoring with three goals. Senior defender Paul Egle is next in points with four as he has a goal and two assists. Senior goalkeeper Dan Jackson has played every minute of each match this season and has posted a 2.11 goals-against-average.
