ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's swimming team won all of its events on Saturday as the Bulldogs prepared for the 2014-15 season with an exhibition meet against Mars Hill at Justice Center Pool.
No score was kept but Asheville won all 14 events it competed in against the Lions. The Bulldogs had six swimmers win two different events on the day. Galen Broido captured the 1000 and 500 freestyle. Alexandra van Dorsten won the 100 and 200 free style. Freshman Shannon Kennedy finished first in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke. Freshman Emily Wert took first in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly.
Freshman Stephanie Smith came in first in the 50 backstroke and 100 individual medley. Senior Ashley Ireland posted first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly.
The 200 medley relay team of Emily Werth, Carly Emerson and Ashley Ireland won the 200 medley relay.
“I was happy with the team's effort today. We are able to see what progress has been made since the start of school, and also learn what aspects of racing we still need to work on,” stated Bulldog coach Elizabeth Lykins. “The Bulldog fans in attendance, as always, created an awesome home pool atmosphere.”
The Bulldogs will have two weeks off to prepare for the season to begin when Asheville travels to Greensboro to take part in the North Carolina Open (Oct. 3-4). The Blue & White's first home meet will be against Campbell on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 10 a.m.
